So i am told today that there is no legal way to buy a truck in sc and drive it back without first having the title in hand....
Sc allows you to transfer your current tag and get the title work done in 10 days, nc issues a temp tag but you have to have the title first. This is the craziest hoops to jump through to be 100% legal....

After 20 mins of talking the girl finally we had this exchange
you said you will still have insurance on the car you sold today that you want to transfer the tag off of correct?
Me: yes
Her: you said you already have insurance on the truck you are buy?
Me: yes
Her: its a fix it ticket, so put your tag on it, print off the sc rules on tag swaps and hope the cop that pulls you if one does is in a good mood. Worst case you come in monday like you plan on and get it done then the ticket will be dropped......

So i guess i will slap my tag on it and carry all the paperwork and roll on home. What has others done?

Drive it with no tag.

We towed Cyd's Jeep home, but when she went to the DMV to get the tags, they told her it had to be inspected first. She asked how she was supposed to get it inspected if it didn't have tags. They told her just to drive it.

You need to start a facebook group for national right to drive legislation so that there is reciprocity for title transfers and license platery between the states.

X3 no tag. NC overlooks it if it's insured. You have to get it insured before you register anyways. And you can even get a "short period insurance" if your company is like mine and you only need it for a few days. I wear my ins. company out on something different all the time and know how lenient they are and how they will insure your left hand for a week if that's what you want.

First vehicle I bought in NC, I slapped a tag on it and drove it home til I went through a license check not far from where I bought it. They confiscated my tag, made me park it and I got a ticket for illegal registration. Had to pay a fine for the ticket and purchase another tag and go back and tow the vehicle home. Good thing it was at a Pantry and they understood my situation and allowed me to park it overnight. Also had to call my roommate to come get me.

Learnt my lesson on this...

What you need is a truck and a trailer.

To use @shawn 's terminology, what we are talking about is an "undocumented vehicle".

I waited in line for an hour on Tues to renew my drivers license. Was about half way to getting into the building at that point, the line was so long. A worker came out and stated that the camera was broken and as a result, they couldn't issue any licenses.

To your point, I was told a few years back that the proper way to do it is to get a temp (3 day) registration that cost $5. You need to wait in line to do it and then go through the entire process once the car is inspected. No thx.

Maybe you could borrow a tag from Mr. Carrier :)

If it's a deal between friends, and they aren't transferring the tag to another vehicle immediately, you can also just keep the tag that's on it until you get home, then mail it back to them. Obviously the person has to trust you b/c if you run any red lights or pull any shenanigans it'll come back to them.

If it was an nc to nc deal the could... No sc to nc temp tags is what i was told..

There is no neighboring state temp tags that transfer to NC last I checked. Each state had it's own.

15-20 years ago NC DMV would not even issue a temp tag. You had to know a dealer personally and get one from them for the dealers wouldn't give you one if the car didn't come off their lot. Was a crazy NC thing thankfully they fixed over the years.

I think you can still get one from a dealer as well???

But if you're not going to drive it for days on end, there's no need for a temp. tag period.

You can transfer tags in NC also. Every vehicle I have ever traded, the dealership put my tag from the old car on the new on and had me keep my bill of sale and proof of insurance. Then I would get new registration for the new car in the mail with the old tag number.

Also, as far as getting on inspected before they give you a tag. They are supposed to go ahead and do all the title work and give you a ten day permit to drive on with no tag. Once it's inspected you go back and get the tag.

bought a truck three weeks ago, drove home on their tag, gave back their tag when I got the title, went to DMV to register, it's insured, needs inspected, bring in proof of insurance ( I forgot it ) and we'll give you a 10 day permit for getting it inspected...

Call wife have her meet me @ DMV with insurance papers, go back in, different desk person, request a 10 day permit. " Why ? " so I can get it inspected...... "Oh, you don't need that, do you need a weighted tag ?" I was actually surprised she asked this,

Seems even in the same office there isn't a consensus of how to actually handle this. Just glad I didn't have to go back a third time. and I don't have to have it inspected until the next tag renewal in '16.

The old owner of the vehicle in question already transferred the tag to the new vehicle...or so I heard.

BTW I got 1 speed camera ticket once for this very reason. The worst part, I was using a DD trying to be responsible and riding in the passenger seat.

car buying is such a pain in the ass.

i've got a vin/registration/antique/out-of-state issue with my resto project....ill be putting that off for at least a year

I think the lady at the tag office on Atlantic Ave may have been extra nice, since I had all the kids with me. #wideopenlife
