NC Emissions?

Does anyone know how the NC emissions testing works? From what I've heard from many different people, and some internet sources (neither a truly reliable source) pre-1996 vehicles are not checked for emissions. Would that mean that an 84 would no longer require cat converters? I'm sorry if this is in the wrong thread, I couldn't decide where it best belonged. I also realize this has probably been asked and answered a couple hundred times, I just couldn't find any straight answers when I searched the forums.

You are correct........

Also as long as the CEL isn't on then they will pass a '96 and up. They do not hook up a "sniffer" to the exhaust to read the emissions.

I thought 95 and older still required a visual inspection to make sure none of the emissions equipment has been removed?

OBDI, pre 1996, does not require a "sniffer" check for emissions, however, as DR said, if the inspector is going by the book he is required to visually inspect for emissions equipment that was OEM on the vehicle and it must be there in order for him to pass it. If it had an OEM cat, it should have a cat on it whether it works or not ;)

i don't think the visual inspection is very thorough in my part. my fried has a 79 k5 that he cut off all the exhaust except for the first 48 or so inches, and drilled holes in it to make it obnoxiously loud, and has gotten it inspected three times without a problem.

DR and JC are correct. For it to pass, what it had from the factory it must have and "appear" to be in working order. I.e. IF it had a belt driven smog pump from the factory it must have the belt attached. It it had cats from the factory they must be there. If it's just a shell with nothing inside it that passes since the inspector can't see inside it. Personally, I like catalytic converters on my vehicles, they make the exhaust smell better and don't rob near the horsepower everyone thinks they do.

It must appear to have all emissions equipment in working order that's it. If its there it passes. I just took all the inspection ckasses a few months ago so that's current.

well i don't mind the smell of exhaust, and either way i'm going to smell it, it's got a dumped right behind the cab.

If you get pulled over and the LEO decides to inspect your vehicle, your inspector could get fined or lose their license.

just say you did it after you left the station!! LEO was hasslin me a few months ago about my tint, wanted to know who tinted my windows and who had been inspecting my vehicle, i told him i scrape the tint off take it to any random Inspection shop get it passed take it home and re-tint myself....... got me a $290 dollar tint and speeding ticket after court costs for that little spill haha

How about when running true duels? It's my understanding that a vehicle needs to maintain "factory" emissions equipment, but our trucks typically came with a single cat (manifolds to a "y" pipe... into a single cat... and then possably into another "y" pipe and then duels). A factory single cat design.
Would running headers into 2 "cat-looking devices" (smart-a$$ speak for two hollow shells that were once cats) and then duel exaust fail the visual test?
