So when the inspector plugs into my obd2 tj what does the ecm tell them about the rig? IE do they see my VIN followed by 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 6 cylinder? Thanks in advance just trying to get the final details of my 5.2 swap wrapped up to pass nc inspection.

I'm an inspector.

We plug the vehicle in, the testing computer does the rest. Meaning we ourselves do not see anything. We scan the VIN from the vehicle, enter engine size, year model, mileage and go from there.
If the VIN in the PCM does not match the VIN scanned/entered for the vehicle, the DMV comes and sees us to make sure we didn't scan one VIN number and plug into another vehicle in order to pass a non-compliant vehicle.
In your case (TJ with a 5.2), the DMV *may* contact you to see why the VIN does not match. No biggie assuming you follwed proper channels emissions-wise when you did your swap. The DMV will then sign off on the swap (layman's terms) and you'll be cool.
Good luck getting a shop to pass your Jeep w/o clear documentation from the DVM...

So if the vin in the 5.2 pcm matches the vin on my registration
then we have no problems right?

I have a company in florida changing the vin and clearing the security out there is a company in virginia that tunes the 5.2 and 5.9 pcms though.

Correct or the DMV rep can/will sign off on it if they do not match. It becomes an issue if a station knowingly passes a vehicle that would not pass by using 1 VIN connected to another vehicle. This is called a clean-scan. This is where "Dave's car won't pass, but "John's" will. They use Dave's VIN, with John's car plugged into the machine.

As long as the vehicle carries all the emissions requirements of the engine.

Basically- lets assume a 97 TJ with a 98 model ZJ 5.2 v8.
The TJ has to have all of the emissions equipment required on the 98 model engine. It also must be functional.
Make sense?

I asked the DMV officer this exactly he said to just get the dealer to re map the 5.2L computer to show the correct vin. I'm going to put a 5.9 in my TJ in the spring and I'm just gonna have the 5.9 computer telling the 2.5 computer everything is alright. Then it will look like its still a 2.5 when its plugged into the computer. Less fuss.

We, the dealers, cannot re-map. But we can chage VIN numbers.
Just clarifying

to be honest i will avoid going through the dmv for the sake of ease and otherpersonal reasons lol.

re-mapping is pointless anyway, just get the v8 ecm and send it off to have your vin and a performan e tune added on.

You dont have both the 2.5 pcm and the 5.9 pcm on board at once... asi said above just get the 5.9 pcm flashed with your tj's vin and if you want a sport tune.
inspection wise, this only applies to 96 and newer correct?
That's correct Peter.:fuck-you:

Does said company in FL tune jeep 2.5/4.0 computers? Are you willing to share their name?

Jody, I hadn't thought much about the VIN issue until reading this. Looks like I will need to get my current jeep vin put onto the computer I have. It's just from another similar equipped jeep.... I'll be in touch when I get to that point....

You are correct. Make sure your vin#'s match.
This summer I installed a GM 5.3L into my 99 TJ, had my vin# changed in the GM computer, and my jeep passed inspection (OBDII test) with no questions asked.

Most vehicles before 2001ish don't send the vin when its plugged in so it could work just running the V8 computer won't matter when they plug it in as long as monitors are completeing with out setting a code. And you can have 2 unset monitors pre 2001 vehicles which means you can sneak through if you know what you're doing.

I will PM you the info, I'm not 100% on legalities. Man do your research or this project will become more of a pain in the ass money pit you could ever imagine. In between the original shop (Cape Fear 4X4) swindleing me and not completing the job, going to full widths and long arms I am going on 19 months. Right now mine wont run, the Dodge and Jeep PCM's have this security SKIM built in with ASD and it is impossible to differntiate the security coded PCM's from the clean ones. When I am done with this swap, I am going to write a 5.2 TJ Bible because the information on the net is just too damn scattered. :gay:

The inspection guys just assume you have a bad ass exhaust? lol

Thanks for the advice, but after all the BS I've been through with this swap the last thing I want to do is bother with trying to fool the DMV.

When I done the 5.2 swap in my wife's 1999 TJ. I sent her computer to Hotwire Auto they put the vin# in the 5.2 computer for me. Once I got everything done and had it inspected I found out that on my wife's computer the vin# never showed up anyway. But the vin# is there if anyone has to look closer. It took me a total of about a month to do the motor swap and 2 weeks of that was blending the 2 wiring harnesses together. That was just working on it during the evenings and weekends. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Her jeep has been up and running about 2.5 years with no major problems so far. If I can help you with anything just hollar at me. My name is Duane 1-336-957-3661 or PM me

well, for now i still have factory 4cyl. exhaust from the cat back. i just made a y-pipe to save alittle $$ and get it back on road. lol...

on my 5.3 swap, I got a y pipe from a 2003 Tahoe, junkyard find, cut it down to fit the TJ, the y pipe had both cats and 4 o2 sensor ports, my custom tune deleted one cat and 2 o2 sensors, it fit nicely in the stock location using a Dynomax muffler and the Jeep factory tailpipe
