NC State Inspection

Nope 1996 and up has to not have a check engine light on. Also a new law about 3 years old and less than 70k is safety only but otherwise no CEL on allowed.

Depends on the year and whether or not the vehicle is registered in an emissions county. If it's a 96 or newer and registered in an emissions county it will not pass with the light on. Even though it's a tranny code.

I used to be an inspector. The new law about 3 yrs and 70k is interesting. We could only put a safety on brand new vehicles that had never been titled at the Chevy dealer I worked for. The law makes good sense though.

If you turn off the CEL how long does it take to come back on?? If it take a little while to come back on you could clear the code, drive it around and to the shop and try to have it inspected.

Typically you have to have at least 100+ miles since it was reset to pass.

That is not always the case, when I was an inspector we had some cars we could clear the code drive them to lunch and back and they would pass, we had others that deff had to drive for at least 100+ miles before they would pass. It is worth a try! Otherwise fix the trans, or what ever problem is causing the CEL.

You can apply for an exemption, but have to show money spent on the car trying to fix it.

You can get an exemption for that it takes some hoops to jump through. Must provide proof of code is non emisions etc etc. call your local dmv

Hmmmmm I will consult the manual tmmrow, but I passed a Toyota truck with no rear bumper today. The tag had light on it.

I don't have a rear bumper and passed just fine a few months back.

I found nothing in the inspection manual about bumpers, not even a check box for it in the list. State law may dictate otherwise but it will pass inspection.

500 each year I think

Yeah...my old man did this a couple years consecutively. Sensors on my moms car were bad, threw codes, CEL was on. What needed fixing cost more than what needed to be spent, and the car ran just fine. Was never more than $300 that had to be proven spent in Rowan. But I believe after three consecutive years, the exemptions are over for the same car.
