If you know the answer, or where I can go to find the info, that would be great! I'm thinking of dropping a V8 in my 2004 Jeep TJ. I was told that I must install a 2004 or newer engine in order to pass inspection. The guy told me that it was an emissions thing.

Is this true and accurate? Where can I go to find the laws in North Carolina governing engine swapping?

And finally, would a 1997 5.9L V8 (360 CU inch) Dodge Ram engine fit in a TJ? Are parts available to make this a simple swap?

simple. i don't think anything like this is going to be simple. the only thing that you got going for it, is that you want to use a mopar engine in a mopar truck.

I've seen photos of a Viper V-10 in a TJ, so yeah, it'll fit.. :p

Honestly, if you get the computer programmed with your VIN and everything checks out, I don't see that they'd notice the difference between a '01 engine and a '05.

Could very well be wrong on that.

I'd bet a stroker would be a mch easier way to get a healthy amount of power.

Stroker is simple and can get you a solid, reliable 250hp and 325ft-lbs. Ride with somebody who has one and see if it changes your mind.
