so I bought a '56 Willys pickup with title. Took title to DMV to put in my name. Since truck is so old and from out of state they are sending out personnel to check it. I found two sets of numbers on the frame and truck has original VIN tag on it and all numbers match so not worried about that part. What does concern me is the the frame has some seroius rust thru in a couple of spots.
Does any of you have any experience with these types of checks? I'm wondering that they may disallow the title due to frame rot? Im definatley going to repair it but didnt want to get heavily involved if for some reason the title didnt go through.

I can't imagine why, from a titling standpoint, they would care about frame rot. People buy old cars just to restore them all the time. The purpose of the titling process is to prove who the owner is, maybe in teh case of rare expensive cars, some amount of value so the state can be sure they are screwing you for tax value...
If they say anything about the rust, tell them you plan to repair just that section but will certainly leave the numbers intact.

Personally I bet this is b/c some dude at the DMV wants to look at a cool old Willys.

They most likely will not have an issue with the titleing process, because all they are concerned about is if it's a legitimately purchased pile of parts. If you go and try to register it to make it road worthy, they may get a little more investigative, but by then the title is in hand.

Out of state vehicles that are over 35 years old require a DMV inspection before they can be titled. Doesn't matter if it is a pile of turd or a 100pt show winner.

Theyve only been concerned with numbers on my junk....

I went through this on a VW from VA. Inspector came and would only issue me what they called a non running title (no engine or interior in the car at the time), he told me when I got it road worthy he would have to come back and inspect it again and then give me a normal title. The VIN was stamped in the pan but the tag on the dash was missing so they assigned a new VIN and put a sticker on the door with that VIN. I never finished the project so I never had the inspector come back. However this has been 3 or 4 years ago so it may have changed some since.

Just heard a story from m y Boss today, as he's trying to get title to a 54 Chevy Truck. He bought it out of Tenn., something like 3 years ago. Not sure when he started trying to get title, but someone has switched doors, & NC says the numbers don't match the truck. He's having to do the Bond thing, & fill out a 10 page form on the "unit", to get a "Build Title". Then an Inspector will come & do his thing, & if it passes, the Inspector will destroy the Old Vin plate, & install the New Vin Plate [sticker/whatever].

I went through this about a year ago on a 66 c10 my dad bought. All they did was come out and check to be sure the numbers did match what the title says, no other questions, no other inspection. I even had it on a trailer when I took it there and hey didn't even ask if it would run and drive.

they're only concerned that it passes the 'safety' items (mirrors, wipers, seatbelts etc) and legitimacy of ownership (title, not stolen, not a kit car, salvage etc). you'll be fine.

I've gotta do this with an old cb750 chopper I picked up from atlanta. It's in an old rigid frame with no numbers. I bet they will make me have it bonded.
