I'm looking for a decent toolbox and have found one that would work for me at harbor freight but being the cheep bastard that I am (my initials are JEW, really!). I believe I could save another dollar or two if I could find an employee discount or something. The box goes on sale next week for $356, but of course you can't use the discount coupons on tool boxes.

BTW, I'm open to a used box too!

Their toolboxes are actually pretty decent. Have had one of the 44" 13 drawer ones for a couple of years. I use it for all my drill bits, mill parts and pieces, side grinder wheels and discs, and the top is my workbench for that side of the shop. Well worth the money, its as good as the old sears boxes at least. Try the coupon anyway, the register girl couldn't get it to work (of course) so she did an override.

The 44" 13-drawer is on sale now for $356.12. Got the sales paper right in front of me, sale goes off today.

I'll look for the dumb one.

Well crap, sorry about that.

I just got the 56" top & bottom combo last weekend. I think their boxes are a great deal for the price for a weekend wrencher like myself.

I have one of their 44" boxes and for the money it can't be beat, a craftsman box with ball bearing slides is almost twice as much and I don't care to spend a couple thousand on a mac, snapon, etc...

I've had that HF box with the matching top box and side box for the last 8 years and have used it and abused it everyday since then. It's been hit with hammers and other flying objects, and used to be rolled around on a regular basis (Loaded with tools). It isn't a $10k Snapon box, but it has served its purpose flawlessly (even the gas struts on the top box still work)

FTR, I haven't seen a Husky box built to the same level of durability as the General boxes. They're lighter gauge steel. We had the ubiquitous 44" General box at the metal shop where I used to work, purchased under my advisement. It was long enough ago that it was $300 on sale. It was a tough-ass box.

HF has an "Insider Club" or Insider Track, card. A friend gave me his extra, but I've seldom used it,or remember it. I think it gives you another 5% off, like a Commercial Customer.
Not sure if & what purchases it can be used on IE Sales & Coupons.
I have talked with the store Manager sometimes, & get an additional Managers Discount!

This.

You should be able to get a discount for that big ass scratch on the side!:D

On a side note, Northern tool has some nice boxes for a good price...

FWIW, I have a tall 13-drawer Husky in my shop now, it seems to be pretty good quality to me. Granted, I've only been using it in the shop for about 7 months now but I'm extremely happy with it.

Huh. I thought the opposite: The Husky boxes seemed better-built than the HF ones.

Maybe different home depots get different quality. The ones in my store seem flimsy and floppy compared to the General brand red box. Not as well laid out, either. I'm not saying the general is the best box on the market, just the best for the money based on my observations.

Doubt it. I'm just going off initial impressions from looking at each of them in the store. I was pretty impressed with the Husky stuff for the price, but it sounds like I should go look at HF again.

I went to HF to buy the General box not realizing that the 20% off didn't work on the cabinets, I walked out when I couldn't get a deal on it. I immediately drove to Home Depot and bought a Husky box that was on sale. Personally, after thoroughly looking over both over the course of about an hour I can say that they are roughly the same and I like the movement on the Husky drawers more. My only complaint is that the lower right drawer on my Husky is really to deep to be used for anything other than collecting tools that I use infrequently.

OK. Just looked at the manuals for no good reason besides the fact that I'm too curious for my own good. According to Husky, their 52" 9-drawer box is good for a little less than 900lbs total. Casters are only good for 1000lbs. The Harbor Freight box is listed as having a combined capacity (including the top of the box) of 2633lbs. So you have a lot more total capacity on the top for a top box or, I don't know, rebuilding a 4bt on it!
