Wondering where I might find this...

I'm installing an E-locker into an 80's Runner. As part of this, you need to add some studs to the main axle housing for the 3rd member to line up correctly. Easy enough.
To get some of the new stud holes to line up correctly, I need a long drill bit - a good 6" or more - in an odd size (hole is tapped for m8 1.25... 6.8mm hole... or ~"H" size or ~17/64.

Where would I find a bit in this size/length? I have one in a pretty comprehensive set but not that kind of length.

I don't recall purchasing an odd drill bit to do this...hmm...lemme think...

Maybe use the larger size of the hole, which should be a long enough bit, to mark the center, remove the diff and come back with the right size. Or...this is a wonderful excuse to buy a transfer punch set...

I checked here, but i had a 15/64 and a 1 long enough... But no luck on anything else close. I would call a machine shop, the guys down here stock odd balls and will sell them if needed

yeah, ideally what I'd like to do is to pass the drill bit through the e-locker housing on the 3rd member (maybe4"?) and into the axle flange, that way I know it's straight. B/c of other stuff on the 3rd, really need liek 6" for drill bit clearance.

You probably used a drill press and jig of some sort to hold the housing perfectly straight and drill downard. That's what I'd do - but i'm working in a garage, and once the axle is off, I don't have any way to take it to a machine shop, besides maybe the roof of my wife's Saturn, lol.

hm, machien shop, there's an idea

I think you could use a long carbide masonry drill bit. Those are easy to come by.

buy a cheep drill bit extentsion, uses 2 allen screws to hold the bit, then you chuck this thing up in the drill, you could modify the extension thing as needed..

Hey RatGuy, You can buy bit extender in most sizes...1/2,3/8, etc at most hardware stores. Take it slow and they work pretty well. IT uses a set screw to hold the bit in and the other end in the drill machine.

LOLz, I just came across that page

Stop by with beer!
:flipoff2:

No Shit? 17/64s in an 8" length? I'll be in town next weekend. I'll trade you any 6-pack you want for one. i'll even mail it back.`

saw that, but none for such an odd size.

Sure did...a five gallon bucket and some wooden shims got it level and took it slow with a drill press...straight enough to get the third in is all you need...:D

soudns classy :huggy:
man, I miss my drill press...

the bit extender will work with any size bit. You tighten the set screws up on the shaft side of the bit.

I also have a 1/4" by 2', 4' or 6'....if a 64th wont matter much

It`s good that you found a drill bit you need. I did all my grinding, drilling, and tapping with the axle still under the truck. I used the e-locker gasket to locate where the new holes would go and started off with a small drill bit. With a good bit of luck, it all went together.

My experience seems to be... whenever I rely on luck, it's never there for me :rolleyes:
if I tried to weld/grind on it under the truck, I'm guaranteed to hurt myself

Last time I needed a longer drill bit, I welded a very larger welding rod to a bit. Chucked it into the drill press and a few taps to get it straight. drilled a 14" hole and ended up 1/16" off of where I wanted to be. I was pleased. But, I was drilling wood.
