Need A New GPS

I've got an older GPS - it's a Magellan 2500 Crossover - & Magellan doesn't even support it with updated maps or software. Can't say I blame them, it's pretty old. So since it screwed me twice on my last trip I'm now in the market for a new GPS. What's everyone running, how do you like it, how's the service/upgrades and what do you recommend? Thanks in advance for your input.

I have a Magellan that is junk, I have two Garmin's that works well for me. The second Garmin is a 1450 LMT that I think is awesome. Dam thing just keeps showing me new stuff it has to offer! If I lost it I would buy another Garmin, probably the DZL version for my needs.

Is this for car navigation, or offroad/camping/hiking type activities?

We have a Garmin Nuvi 50 for car navigation that does everything we need it to do, and every so often you can buy it on sale with free lifetime maps that allows you (I think 4) map upgrades annually.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1300LM and the thing is damn near useless. It has me take the most ridiculous routes no matter what I have it set on. Once it told me to get off at an exit, and then cross over and get back on the highway at the SAME PLACE.

Thing is garbage. I only use it for the map view now.

BTW, its less than a year old. I got it for Christmas.

Have you updated the software and the maps? Mine has never taken me a wrong direction and I have it set to fastest time (vs shortest route, which can take you some crazy ways).

Google Maps and a smart phone for me. I hate GPS's.
+1, just google the address, click directions and it pops up. Some time I will copy and paste into a free mapquest app an have all the features of a gps.

Absolutely the best. It will also give you info if you are looking for a business. Phone # hours rating. Plus it is very accurate. Leaps and bounds above gps

Google maps makes plenty of mistakes too. It really sucks when it sends you to some F'd place driving a tractor trailer. I can look at my neighborhood on it and most gps, and see roads that don't exist. No GPS is 100%. I use my phone and gps in the laptop, but I would just as soon use a map.

My Garmin does this also.

having done cartography for a map company, there's a phrase cartographers use on a daily basis. ALL MAPS LIE!

Jim is correct, when I'm driving the camper and flat towing a car you CANNOT BACK UP. You have to get out and unhook, backup, then rehook. I check a lot on Google Earth and the map(paper) and the GPS before I leave.

Thanks for the replies guys. I bought the Magellan Crossover years ago because it did road, off-road/trails & water navigation. Fast forward to today and I've sold my boat, never used it for trails, so esentially I'm looking at one for road navigation. Normally I check google maps or mapquest, but this last trip had me driving with someone who talked non-stop so the GPS lady telling me when to turn was helpful. Except when she had me get off the highway, go back over the highway on an overpass, make a U turn, and then get back on the highway going in my original direction. Oh yea, and then she had me go 3 miles past the road I was looking for, make another U turn, double back up the highway for 3 miles and then turn on the road I needed. At least it was good for a laugh. I'll check out the ones y'all recommended.

No, TBH I have no clue how to do that.

Thing is, Im not sure how an update would make it understand that I do not need to go across the street, turn right, do a loop and then get back on the first street just to turn left.

LOL, I agree, but there could be a bug for that particular area and the update would fix it. Unfortunately GPS units have software just like a computer and crazy things happen.

I had a Nuvi also, it got removed from my hauler. IF anyone is upgrading, I am in the market for one cheap!
I liked it , worked good for me

If you know how, some Garmins will tell you the temperature!

I thought you were one of those guys who didn't need maps or new fangled gps:flipoff2:

I can find any Military Base and most of the Produce picks and delivery points from memory. But these campgrounds are tricky! I used to know the states and page numbers in a Rand Mcnally by heart. I bet you can spout off some mileages across some states too. LOL

Garmin Nuvi 2495LMT. Love it. Bluetooth for the phone, and hands free voice commands.

Your Hot Dog Guy - how do you get them to show the temp?

I was just talking about this the other day. Google maps has all sorts of "alternative" modes that tell you how to get there on a bus, or how to get there on foot. They need one that shows you how to get there towing a 50ft trailer.
