97 xj 4.0 aw4 trans. 170,*** miles. has been driving fine today went to pull a empty trailer and it acted like it did not want to shift into drive. rpms would go up and the only way to shift was letting off the gas and then hitting it again. i checked the fluid and it was low some. put some in but it still seems like it is doing it. any sugestions.

OK, let me make sure I understand correctly, I assume you are saying it won't go into overdrive.
If letting off the gas and then re-applynig it lets it go into od, you have issues. The most common problem is the bearing on the end of the stator (back of the pump) goes bad and creates a bunch of heat, the heat then melts the washer on the pump, once the washer melts and breaks in two, it allows the high gear drum(direct) to slide back and forth. When the drum is sliding the sealing rings on the pump are covering the apply holes on the drum, letting off the gas the re-applying, allows the drum to set back in place.

it only does it sometime without pulling a trailer. driving it today without a trailer it worked fine. its not slaming into gear and shifts at about 2000-2500 except going into od it gets to about 3000-3500. worst case will i need to get the trans rebuilt?

ok i have been looking at things all nite. my junk shifts at 3000-3500 could this be the tps causing all this.. also anyone have a pic of one i think it the one on the right as you look at it.
