So I bought a 93 Toyota pickup with the 22re a few months ago and believe it or not it has been horribly unreliable. I must have just gotten a bad one, but I'm going to sell it and get something new soon so my question is.... What do i get? My budget is 4500- 7k for something really nice. I'm a student but want something for easy to moderate weekend wheeling. But don't really want a full size so I can make ure trips occasionally. I thought Yota was the way to go but re just been a money pit. What should I look at people? Need decent mpg, reliability is pretty big and off-road ability is in there two but it's less of a priority

Look hard and you can find a nice 3rd gen 4runner in that range.
3.4 v6 gets good mileage and auto trans is reliable.
Almost all have moon roof, I love my power rear window and they are easy and cheap to lift a little for larger tires.
Mine has rear Elocker, it is worth the extra search in my opinion.
Great off road and take plenty of stuff with you.

I just lifted my Limited for under $100.

What kind of problems are you having with the yota?

$4500-7k is just enough to buy you a headache. Jeeps suck, don't buy one. Spend a fraction of that budget getting the Toyota up to snuff.

X2 on the 3rd gen, if you're a Yota fan.
And if you're not... well then you're just retarded and I can't help you :Do_O:flipoff2:

I also vote upgrade/fix what you have. Chances are you could fix yours into a dependable vehicle for a fraction of what you would spend on another.

The last owners were a bit neglectful of it. But I don't know it seems like everything is breaking at once. Needed a starter (just General mantainence I know but it was a pain in the ass) a power steering line went bad, now the maf sensor has a short somewhere in the harness. The rear axle seal is bad, it needs new cvs the list goes on. It's a cool truck and I like it but it's a piece of work. I understand these are all little things and I can do them all myself, but I don't wanna be in college having to fix my truck all the time when I already have class to deal with.

all that is stuff you'll very possibly have to do on any truck that is > 10 years old.
Just sayin'.... if you don't want to worry about maintenance, spend that money on something a lot newer. And it probably won't be a truck...

And at that price range I wouldn't expect to find a truck that didn't need something. Heck even a truck that has been well maintained is still gonna have problems like the one you have. If you want a truck that doesn't have any leaks or grimlens your going to have to pay 15,000 plus even more so for a Toyota

How far does that list go on? All that you mentioned is around a half day work and less than a couple hundred bucks. Youll spend more than that truck shopping again. Fix the yota and roll on!

you're dealing with a neglected 22year old truck probably over 200k miles, you should expect issues. fix them, and it will be a very good reliable truck. done this to several, most current is a '97 4Runner (3rd gen) SR5, similar issues but different, over 200k on it, runs like a top

you more than likely DON'T need a starter, you just need starter contacts in the solenoid. $15 in parts from rock auto and ab little over an hour of time. ( have 2 good used 22RE starters I'll sell for reasonable if you're interested, I don't need them anymore as I don't have any trucks with that engine any longer, if nothing else, a good spare isn't a bad thing to have )

Rear axle seal, needs axle bearings, don't just do a seal, the bearing has worn enough that the seal can no longer do its job. the parts aren't stupid expensive ( $60 for the bearing per side, seal is about $8, use good name brand, Timken or BCA ), but you'll need a press and a special ( home made) tool to remove and install the bearings on the axle shaft.

Power steering hose, it is what it is, a 22yo part that lasted far longer than ever expected

as for the CV'S, are they bad because the boots are torn, or are they rattling around dry of lube and the balls have started to come apart ? torn boots, you've got time, and it's still drivable axle shafts aren't terribly expansive ( $50-$70 @ Rockauto.com ) and not too tough to change out

MAF wiring could be fun, if water has gotten inside the MAF, it could be an issue.

Ujoints, grease them, grease the ball joints too

SAS the front! Problem solved! Those engines really are tuff! I have brought back 22re's that have been sitting in a field for 10years! Few hundred dollars and some work and it will run like a champ!

You could buy a 5.4 ford! Ask JFuller his runs great!!!!:fuck-you:

I bought my 94 yota for 2600 bucks and it needed quite a few things. I fixed all the necessities in the first couple days for about $100 bucks (minus tires or course). Thing runs like a top now. I'm working on a SAS and 63" swap now so should be a tough little truck when I get done this summer
