Guys I dont have a tow rig and I was thinking of towing my rig with a tow bar. I have a 01 6cyl 4runner and will be towing the vehicle in the picture below. Do I need to drop the drive shafts or just put the transfer in neutral. Do I also just leave the steering wheel unlocked so it turns when I do? Any advice would be great. Is this a good idea or a bad one.

It has 5.29 gearing and locked up f/r...I will tow backroads and no over 55mph

If you are going to flat tow, you might as well drive it to the trail.
many are going to chime in (myself included, that you dont have enough tow rig weight to flat tow, but more significant if you break, say an axle shaft, you are stuck. Towing, to me, only make sense on a trailer, otherwise drive it.

Could I just pull the axle and still tow? That is really the reason for towing is hours away from hom and if I do break an axle at least I could pull the axle and still get home. Plus I'm just no 100% sure it will make 4 hours of round trip driving and 2days of wheling. i just haven't gotten that comfortable with her yet. motor , tranny, axles just rebuilt. I might drive it...I just thought this way I'm not totally stuck.

i know several people who tow with a tow dolly and just remove the rear driveshaft. works great for them they tow toyos with toyos and don't have problems. as far as flat towing i'm not sure but i would remove both shafts to be safe, unlock hubs if you have them, so everything isn't moving up front

if its a floating axle yeah you can pull it (honestly no clue yotas are one thing Ive never touched or thought about)
But think more serious breakage.
Snap a C, break a mount etc.

Don't think I would ever do it. Whats it rated to tow? And thats with Brakes.... Your off road rig will weigh more then the tow rig and on a flat tow that could be the death of it. Plus getting a tow bar to be flat would be hard to no way on that rig....
