i am trying to find out what axles i have on my jeep but dont know where to look. I have a 99 cherokee sport but am putting the front axle off a 92 cherokee on it because i broke mine, so i need to know if the ratios are the same

Should be a tag attached by two bolts the ratio is bottom left of the tag. Sometimes it is hard to see the ratio is not stamped as good as the other numbers on the tag.

here's an example...in this case, the gear ratio is 3.73

heres the junkyard method. if the 92 is on jackstands or whatever just mark you a spot on the rotor, rim, or tire and turn the wheel one complete turn and as you do this count how many times the yoke turns on the axle. if it turns 3and a 1/2 times u got 3.54 gears if it turns 3and 3/4 u got 3.73 and so on and so forth. hope that helps

unless it's open diff...and then you have to turn it two full turns...

I have a '99 XJ and my rear axle is a chr 8 1/4 it actually had a big sticker on the axle. I'm not sure if the 35 rears will have the same. My ratios are 3.55.

I also need to know where is a good place to get a 6 inch lift for a good price. Im not going to be doing any really difficult stuff so i was thinking of getting a 4 1/2 inch rough country lift and 2 inch shackles and blocks.

You cannot CORRECTLY stack a spacer/block on a 4.5" lift that has crappy fixed control arms. If you want 6" set it up correctly and get a 6" long arm kit. a 6" short arm kit rides awful and you have no way to adjust your pinion angle/castor angle on the front axle.

Do it correctly or don't do it. You will be MUCH happier with the outcome.

where can i find a good, somewhat affordable six or eight inch long arm lift and how much do they usually run for.

RE has a 5.5" LA kit...which will probably net you over 6" of lift...lists for $1854.95, but I'm sure Andy can get it for you for less than that...

Hey,

3.55 gears were extremely common in the XJ's. the 3.73's generally coming with the tow package, and 3.07s with the 5spds. maybe 4.10s with 4bangers, not really sure. i know the wranglers came that way.

honestly with 33"s, you'd probably be happier and have more power and get better gas mileage if you had 4.10 gears. but the 3.55s are probably livable.

www.rustysoffroad.com makes a variety of lifts, including 6" and 8" kits. and i work at an offroad shop in north raleigh, so if you'd like me to price you a lift kit and/or installation, i'd be more than happy to help.

happy trails,
bigmac
