I'm on my way to PA from Fort Bragg in my XJ. coming through Winston Salem, I hit a huge bump in the road on 52. I immediately started having a bit of vibration, but I didn't think it was anything too serious. the farther down the road I went, the worse it got, so I got off on an exit and stopped. I started looking around under the hood and noticed that the fan shroud on the passenger side was broken and was causing some of the noise I was hearing (the loud clicking was coming from the fan hitting the shroud). after I got it off, I started down the road again but only got about a mile or two before the vibrations started getting worse. I stopped at the Citgo here in Mt. Airy (in front of Wal Mart) to look some more and noticed that one of the motor mounts seems to be broken. it looks like it sheared 2 of the bolts off. it runs fine and drives but I don't want to drive it far. can SOMEBODY in this area help me out? I've got to get this taken care of immediately so I can get back on the road...I'll pay, buy dinner, whatever...

I am no where near Mt. Airy, but if you are still at Wal Mart, buy a ratchet strap and use it to hold the motor down. Or if you have a winch, do what I did on my last ride after I broke a motor mount...pull the winch cable under the bumper, hook onto a bracket on the motor, and tighten the winch. Good luck!

if I can just get it back on the road, I'll cancel my whole PA trip and just go home...but I'm 130 miles from home right now and definitely do NOT want to drive it all the way home without getting it fixed first...I've got my camera with me...I'll take a picture of what I believe is causing the problem and maybe you can tell me what you think....give me about 5 minutes...

Walmart has Jacks, is there a parts store near by that you can get a Motormount? Swap it out there in the Parking lot.

Other than that, can you ratchet strap it down and get it back to Winston (Avoiding that bump again of course). Several Guys in Winston that might can help out.

I have seen people use C clamps also...If there is any surface you can get the C clamp to hook around or over the motor mount and tighten it on the back of the motor plate/ frame some how. Just and an idea. we use to do this to run them to the engine shop. You will need the biggest C clamp they have. Strap would be easier probably

I carry a small floor jack in the Jeep everywhere I go, but the biggest problem with changing it out here in the parking lot is the fact that it sheared 2 of the bolts off in the block and I have no way to get them out...they'd need to be tapped and whatnot...uploading the pictures now

you could always buy a drill and bit and see if they have an easy out and just return when done...Did you find a parts store...if so they will do a tool loan, set up shop in a corner of there parking lot...Can you drive to a advance or autozone and work on it there...I will do a search of closest for you

a guy just pulled up beside me in the parking lot here and I asked him if there was a place around here that I could go to and get it taken care of and he said to go right down the street to where he works and see if they could do it...he said if they can't, they might be able to tell me somewhere else around here that could....I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Closest Advance I found...

6.8 N of you
Advance Auto Parts

Farmville, NC 27828

if all else fails the rachet strap should get u home. that must have been 1 hell of a hole.

liftnaleg is on top of things

I just went to Laser Lube down the street (where that guy from the gas station works) and they said they could do it but to bring it back around 2:30...even if I have to get a hotel room here for the night so they can have it finished in the morning, that's fine with me. at least it'll be done...and then I could possibly get back on the road to PA! haha

there's an Advance right across the street (literally) from where I'm sitting right now, and 2 hotels right here too. hey guys, thanks for the help/suggestions. you ever need anything let me know and I'll do my best to help out...

same thing happened to me in my XJ when I lived in Knoxville. I was coming down Bearden Hill and at the bottom is a haneous bump. I hit it and all hell broke loose. I ended up shearing all 3 bolts off :poop:

it may have sheared all 3 off, I dunno...I can't really tell on the top one...but there's for sure 2 that are sheared clean off...oh well...hopefully these guys can get me back on the road tonight so I can get to PA...

it sure was one hell of a bump. I didn't even see it. it was at a bridge...I dunno if maybe the road had given away where the bridge meets the roadway or what, but it was big. I feel like a total idiot for somehow missing it

You have broken the motor mount completely from the block.

There is not a quick fix for it, and there is not really a good way to ratchet strap it. A c-clamp would have to go all the way around the motor. Where it is it will be very hard to extract the bolts without removing a bunch of crap.

here is a post about the same problem

here is the long term fix

MORE sells them, along with a couple others. Makes for 7 mounting bolts instead of 3.

If you cannot get the old bolts out to replace them, I may be able to pick you up and tow you back to Fayetteville tomorrow for lunch and diesel, but diesel aint cheap anymore:rolleyes:

they just came out and told me that the bolts are definitely sheared off in the block (not something I didn't already know) and that it's going to be very hard to get to them to get them out but they're going to take the A/C stuff off and rearrange some stuff and it'll be fixed by lunch tomorrow. I'll have to get a room here in town for the night, but at least it's getting fixed and I'll be on my merry way....and I'll DEFINITELY be looking into those mounts from MORE....thanks!!

I'm from Mt. Scary. I wish I would have checked this earlier. Parrish Tire would have been a good place to go. It's up 52 about 3 miles from where you are.

Check out Goober's 52 on your way out of town tomorrow. You won't regret it - it's on 52N about 1000 ft past Mayberry Mall.

I had this happen in an old Nissan I used to drive. Fortunately, I was in the Autotech course at the time. We jacked the motor up so we could get to the bolts, removed the motor mount to make more room, and slotted the sheared bolts with a cut-off wheel. Then we simply backed them out with a flathead screwdriver. There's really no torque to bind them up once the heads have popped off! No messed up threads or anything. I'd recommend this before I went ripping stuff off the motor to try and drill them out. If it doesn't work, then you've wasted five minutes. If it does, then you've fixed it in five minutes!

Damn, i just got on and see this. I live in Mt. Airy, im sure I coulda got something fixed up for you. If you are still around tommorow let me know.

Yeah, too bad you didn't do this a few miles earlier in Winston. A bunch of us here that could have helped you out.

I think I'm just gonna head back home today after it's done instead of continuing on my journey. Maybe I'll go home, get my OBA from my apartment, and then go back to Salisbury (my hometown) and put it all on. It'd be something to do I guess.

lowestjumerXJ,,,

hows it going? on the way home yet? good news? or more bad news?

let us know please!

Bud

yeah, I'm actually back in Rockwell/Salisbury now. I made it back several hours ago. I went to pick up the Jeep this morning after checking out of the hotel and the guy said they were able to get 2 of the 3 bolts out and they were replaced. I suppose I'll be looking into the MORE mounts pretty soon in hopes that this never happens again. I'll still be out at URE on the 4th, 5th, and 6th, and hopefully I'll have some more new stuff added. the new tires are coming tomorrow, the OBA will be put on this weekend, and hopefully I'll be getting a new front bumper with some lights so I can see where the crap I'm going at night! thanks for all the help guys
