I seem to be having the same problem as mentioned in the article here:
http://www.stu-offroad.com/axle/driveshaft/driveshaft-5.htm
I am not a mechanic and am low on money, is there anyone in Raleigh or nearby that could tell me whether or not I need to replace the entire front drive shaft on my '00 TJ or that the CV assembly just needs work....and not charge me an arm and a leg? Already paid $35 for a diagnostic I probably didn't need. A friend took a quick look at it and didn't see anything wrong but I know there is.
I want to make it to URE again in a couple weeks but cannot go unless I get this fixed.
A mechanic is trying to get me to replace the entire shaft but that's most likely because he wants more money out of me. I'd appreciate some help from someone not too far from Raleigh. It would be completely kick ass if I could get up with someone that could diagnose as well as help me find the parts I need and fix the problem. Especially if you are inexpensive!
Also a plus would be if I could assist and/or you could show me what the hell is goin on, and the steps you take to fix it. Then again I may be asking for too much, but then again I've learned that people in the off-roading community are pretty damn kick-ass. Thanks!

Check the salvage yards at www.car-part.com . You could have skipped the diagnostic and paid 60-70 bucks for a front shaft. Takes about 10 min to change out with very simple hand tools. Just fyi if you are going 2 hours down the road to URE and are worried about $ you need to learn this type of maint. just in case. You can bring it by my place if you buy the shaft and I'll show you how to get it out.

Hey, thanks for the reply man. The dude I took it to said I would have to pay $170 for him to get the shaft for me from a junk yard. I'll check the site you suggested.
Yah, been to URE twice already this year, started having a problem with the shaft after the last trip. I know I have to learn maintenance like that, that's why I asked if someone could show me how to do it... I would really appreciate it.
It's really important to me to learn this stuff so I can do it myself for more reasons than one. I'm learning as much as possible when I get the chance from buddies in my club. I appreciate the offer, I'll message you once I get ahold of the shaft. THANK YOU

Oh btw, it's prob good that I spent the $35 for the diagnostic considering I knew that it was something to do with the drive train but that's as far as I could tell.

Just after last trip to URE brought it by the place where I got tires since it's close to my work. Dude tells me the squeak is just from all the mud inside the brake calipers (I hadn't cleaned it hardcore yet from the trip) and to just rinse it good with water.

I was so pissed that I went home and took the front tires off and rinsed it so well that part of the jeep looked like it never got muddy. Still the noise needless to say. I wanted to go back and give him a bit of hell, but he didn't charge me for that worthless crap that had come out of his mouth. I may still go by there just to tell him how wrong he was and how much of an ass he must be to try to tell me that :poop: in the first place. :shaking: but I may need to get some more tires from him down the road

Honestly that prob was it. You can get all types of crap in your brakes and have a squeel. Please remember though..........the mechanic isn't wrong until you know whats wrong with it. Not trying to be insulting but if you have no clue whats going on with your car theres prob a 100% chance he knows more than you. Be kind to your mechanic he can f**k you harder than a 2 dolla ho.

Yah I know what you are sayin' (good thing that dude isn't my mechanic), they've done me like that before. A couple times I think I would've been happier dealing with a bad case of chafe-age than the reaming they've given me before.

really it's not just a squeak though, it's a bit of banging around too that is very audible from when the shaft rotates going down the road but it does get worse once power is put to it when I drop it in 4wd. I think dude was just blowing me off b/c he didn't want to take a good look at it at the time.

Thanks again for the offer and I will get up with you soon!
