Hey guys My name is Fermin, I have a 1981 Jeep CJ-7 is mostly stock, I have a 3" lift and sitting on 31" tires, everything works great, the 4x4 works awesome, but last month the rear differential started to leak fluid, I took it appart and found a crack on the rear left side of the differential, where the wheels bolts on. I looked around and found one at a local junk yard, the person there told me it was for a 81 and it turns out is not, the rear differential he sold me is 3" longer than the one i took off. I talked to him and he wont do refunds so im stuck with it. I dont know alot about the CJ but im hoping you all can help.

Thank you in Advance!!!!

AMC 20 axle? Sounds like you got an 82-up widetrack axle. As far as I know, and I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but it should bolt in. It used to be a very common swap to get the wide track axles and swap them under earlier CJs for the extra stability. Check your diff ratio. If they're the same as the old one, you should have no problems besides being 4" wider in the rear. Grab the front axle, too, and swap in in there eventually!
