I bought this rig a few weeks ago and it is very clean and runs excellent. It is a S1900 Crew cab International with DT466 diesel, two speed rear end. The only problem it is geared so low I cannot run over 55 @ 2500 rpm. I would at least go 65 or 70 on the hwy. I need a different gear or different rear end.
Does anyone have good advice?

pull a heavier load. j/k what are the gear ratios?

Run a divorced NP205 behind your tranny.

You can go up a size or two on tires and it will help alot as long as you have the power you need. The 466 only has about 200hp but tons of torque, I drive one at work and pull 40'000 lb with it.

nice find with the crew cab Dt466... How much $ you want to spend ?

The Transmissions seem to go for big $$. But IIRC the later stuff had transmissions with OD optioned. Or figure out what (capacity) rear axle you have and look to swap in something similar with better gears.. OR 22s super singles would be slick...

In theory, you should be able to find a different rear gear that will get you up there. I personally have never seen an International that would go that fast, though. The newer ones with single speed rears and 7spd Fullers felt like they might, but even they were governed to 58mph.

The reality is that those trucks were really intended for short-haul, local stuff, so they're powered and geared appropriately. You probably need to ask yourself if you get it geared to run 70mph (really thinking you'd need a transmission and a single speed diff to do it), does it have enough ass to maintain the speed? Again, those older trucks can't pull a hill at 55mph loaded.

I don't see a tire size change getting you a whole lot of improvement. If you want to go from 55mph to 70mph, you'll need the equivalent of going from a 35" dia tire to a 44" tire.

tow rig

have put a new ring gear in them before. The last one at the shop was a 5 speed tranz with 2 speed axle dump truck. Man bought it and had us put a box bed on it and change the gear so he could drive it back and forth from NC to FLA. Before the gear change it was screaming at 65 going down the highway.Dont know the price but it was no problem finding the gear International Greensboro is very helpfull, and labor was only several hours.

Look up T.A. Powertrain in Garner, all they do is rebuild third members for trucks, they won't swap the chunk for you, ( they build for shops ) but they may help you figure out the best route for gearing and maybe suggest a local shop to help you out, or maybe talk to Fleet Pride on Jones Sausage. Any way you go, it ain't gonna be cheap.
