97 xj .. belt or pulley started to squel. put on a new belt. still a squel. put on a new idler pulley. still squel. put on new water pump and belt came off and there was still the squel. put on old belt. squel stoped but the belt is still working its way off of the altinater pulley and the fan pulley. any sugestions.

ok would it make sense that the water pump is from a grand cherokee and is a 16th of a each shorter to the pulley and that would put it out line

Make sure the belt is routed correct. The smooth part of the belt should be against the idler pulley if it is smooth. My brother had a similar problem with his.

yes just went and double checked the pump i have the rite one. the belt is run the rite way. im gona sand the flat pulleys and see if that helps

So there was a squeal with no belt on? (Where you said the belt came off and there was still a squeal).

Just a thought, but sounds like something is out of alignment, or has a broken bracket. Maybe a bad/locked up bearing. Have you checked the Alternator, PS, AC, ;spin them with the belt off?

Mine kept chirping and squeeling on the van, took a screwdriver and cleaned out the grooves on the crank pulley and it went away.

That's more annoying than a wheel weight coming off on the highway.:shaking:

Ok so went and got another water pump to replace the one i just put on. cleaned everything with break cleaner. still didnt fix the issue. I sent out for help and a buby showed this morning. he looked at it and said hey the harmonik (bad spelling) is out to far. I hit it from the back with a hammer and the outside ring came off. So back to oriely for the fourth time in three days and its fixed. Just one of those weekends. new water pump, new old belt, new tensioner, new ballencer and all cleaned up pullies. total about $100 and lunch. thanks Garry:beer:
