Have a guy wanting to trade me a 91, Ford F-250 4X4, auto, with 167K 7.3 diesel

What to look for and look out for, info welcomed!

Check the rear pinion for play as that's a weak spot. The other issue is they need a turbo and have no power. Being a diesel everything is expensive also.

When we first started our elec business we bought had 2 trucks a 91-92 7.3 and a 91 460.
the 460 was loads better at toting the mail.
The 460 sucked gas put could pull, I looked into a turbo for the NA Diesel and it just wasnt worth it.

Sold the diesel the gasser still sees occasional use today

a diesel without a turbo is useless.

I understand that a non turbo diesel will not preform like a turbo one. This is not what I asked for.

I am looking for problems that may arise as in the pinion issue that Shawn said to look out for.

From what I have been told they are a pretty simple engine. Injector pump being one of the more expensive things to go wrong, but only costly about $600 to replace if it did go out. Glow plugs on the outside of engine, not too much a pain to change if needed. The AOD tranny can be replaced with a C-6 if needed. Will pull up hill about as fast as on the flats.
Also told it will get decent MPG's both towing and around town.

It's a 4X4, what axle is in the front?

1977-PREVIOUS F350, F250 snowfighter: low pinion dana 60, very weak.....

1978-1979 F350, F250 snowfighter: high pinion dana 60, kingpins, 35 spline outters, 30 spline inners, internally splined lockout hubs

1980-1985 F350/F250: high pinion TTB dana 50

1986-1991 F350: solid high pinion dana 60, king pins, 35 spline outers, 30 spline inners, internally splined lockout hubs, different spring spacing that 78/79 axle

1986-1989 F250: TTB dana 44HD/ TTB dana 50, both high pinion

1991-1997 F350: solid dana 50/solid dana 60, 50 hase smaller ring gear and axle shafts than 60

1990-1997 F250: TTB dana 50, high pinion

1999-2008 F250: solid dana 60, solid dana 50, both high pinion, metric pattern

1999-2008 F350: solid dana 60, high pinion, metric pattern

MIght want to make sure it is not a TTB front.

Front axle is almost 100% going to be TTB Dana 50 on leaves. That was standard from 80-97 on the 3/4t, aside from a few light-duty models that got 8 lug D44. The D44 hubs neck down to the lockout like 8-lug Chevies. D50s use the same hub as the D60, so they're fat all the way out.

Front end could probably benefit from all new pivot and spring bushings.

Yep, TTB front axle. Looks for oil leaks as they tend to leak everywhere. Oil pan is prone to rust out and is a major job to replace.

Had a na 7.3 ford, great truck, had over 400k, and is still running to my knowledge. Overall, very reliable truck, ttb gave a decent ride, but was worn, and would eat tires. seemed to get about 17 mpg no matter what. empty, loaded, headwind, tailwind and downhill, didn't matter, 17 mpg. Never met a trailer that would hitch to the f250 that the diesel wouldn't pull. Not near as strong as the '02 model that replaced it, and wouldn't hold 70 mph like the newer truck running up I40 through the mountains, but overall was very happy with the truck.

glow plugs easy to change...expect that one in the back that its easiest to just remove the cab than try to figure out what needs to come off to access it.

Don't assume the GPs are "easy". Like BRB2 said, there's a couple that are a PITA to reach AND *IF* some chinazone GPs are used, there's a very high likelihood the tips are either swelled or kinked... which means pulling the IP, intake, & heads to fish them out when they break off!

Depends if you're talking empty or pulling a decent load (in the bed or trailered). While mine ('92) was a 5spd, it fine empty... this simply was NOT true of the NA + trailered load bro. It might fly down the hills and be OK on the flats, but you better wind it up tight a long ways off it you hope to pull any hill loaded.

Mine got about 20 unloaded highway and avg. 11 pulling my Jeep & OBXfishermans Chero (2 different trips) to Mtn City.

I liked the truck for the most part, but a takeoff ATS ($1000+) or Banks Sidewinder ($1500+) turbo for them was way outside of the budget for a $3K truck. I sold it to buy the CTD... with the emphasis on TURBO! :D

My uncle has one with about 500k on it. Its green ugly and it tows stuff that is way to heavy to be towed with it. I tried to buy it but he wouldn't sell it. He ownes a grading company so that tells you what it gets used for.
