Need opinion on 4runner

Looking at getting one for my daily and saving my 01XJ with 127K miles as my toy.

Just need someones 2 cents that knows toyotas. Heres what Im looking at. Both owners are asking above book value./

1992, 4 door, 4wd, very clean. 3.0v6, 150k miles, asking $2850

1998, 4 door, 4wd, very clean, 172k miles, 3.4v6, asking $4500

Is the 3.4 worth the extra $2000? Its newer, looks very nice, but the 92 is very nice as well, just not as many modern touches to it. Just curious what you guys thought would be the better choice for the money. Thanks.

Stay away from the 3.0

The 3.4 is a very solid motor. I'd go w the 98 if it was me.

Xwhatever on the newer one. 3.4 so much better than 3.slow.

Don't buy the 3.0, if it has factory exhaust manifolds, it will eventually blow the head gasket, and it's a pain to fix.

3.4 is way better.

ask about service history, look radiator trans cooler lines very close ( if you buy it, install remote cooler and abandon cooler in radiator, they are a known problem for mixing fluids due to cooler failure) check trans fluid, it should be blood red, not pinkish

ask about timing belt and water pump (unless they have recent proof, plan on doing this asap) if the belt breaks, no big deal, line it all back up, put a new one on, if the water pump goes and you over heat, the heads are gone. don't do one without the other

all tires same model and size ? turn radio off on test drive, listen for noise from rear axle, pinion bearings are an issue, not tough to fix, but not cheap easy either.

if you buy it, grease EVERY fitting in front and rear driveshaft (there are 5 fittings on rear shaft)

Well, in my search, came across a 01 chevy tracker. My buddy has one with a small lift and tires and goes to uwharrie with us and does really well, gets decent gas mileage and has been reliable as hell for him. its his second one and has 200k on it and still running great. I found a 01 zr2, 4wd, skid plates, 4.88 gears, 77k miles! Single owner for 3500! believe im going to go check it out. not really crazy about the looks but itll be a good reliable daily driver
