need schooling on back spacing

Son's xj has stock rims but the tires rub on lower control arms. Are stock rims 3" BS?. What BS would he need to not rub?.

Sorry...seems basic but I want to make sure I get him good rims.

More info required. What size tires is he trying to clear?

...and OEM XJ wheels are something like 5.25" backspacing.

Are you trying the 33s with the 5.25" backspacing wheels or the 3" backspacing wheels? You'll have more tire clearance with the 3" backspacing, which is why your posts are very confusing. You can measure backspacing using something straight (yardstick or whatever) across the inside wheel face and a tape measure between that and the wheel hub flange.

Width also matters here... 10.5 or 12.5 wide tires? If 12.5, would you run a 10" wide rim? All factors change the answer.

Good video, it helped explaining things. I want to go with 33/12.5 the same as my YJ. I don't recall the BS on it.
