My computer is fried in my 97 xj ecors racer. I need to get this fixed asap.

A buddy told me that 96 and up models would not inner change. That the VIN codes were encoded in the vehicle specific computer.

Ok heres what I have..only Throttle and trans need a brain. Everything else is gone...I think.

so do I go to a dealer for a pricey new unit..or what? Anyone on here know how to fix mine?

Hitchcock told me about a guy in Fla that rebuilds them. I trust what he says, just looking to see if anyone else knows other stuff.

missing on a bunch of cylinders..just generally running like crap..smells like fuel pouring out the pipe.

Idle is like sputter sputter spit spit sputter. When you get on it, it sort of cleans out some..but lower idle is crap. My driveability mechanic (Snider automotive)says..I need a computer. Plugs/wires dist. cap are all good. TPS is new and good. Air filter is clean...now. Fresh gas..clean throttle body.

No need to "program" the PCM on a 97 like yours. They will still run 100% fine with or without the VIN being programmed.
That being said, unplug the rear 02 sensor and see how it runs compared to with it plugged in.
PM me as needed. I didn't forget 15 years of my tech knowledge in the last year. ;)

edit: Lisa said to add the truck to my post (and she says hi) :bronco:

not disputing your expert...but how'd the fuel pressure look? Sort of sounds like when my fuel pump was clogged with crap. Fuel pressure looked fine when idling, it took Grigg's keen eye to see a stutter in FP gauge when I dropped the hammer. This was while parked, then we taped the gauge to the windshield and went for a drive. It was still hard to see, but the pressure would drop slightly when it bogged down when accelerating. I pulled the fuel pump and found the rubber grommet that suspended the pump was deteriorated into little rubber cubes that were scattered on the bottom of the tank. New pump assembly, cleaned tank up, all was good.
With the amount of mud you raced in though, I could see mud getting packed in the ECU wreaking havoc

Mine seems to pick up and do better when I mash the pedal..its the idle and lower rpms that seem to kill it..but, Its not running right, evn when I do throttle up. Dont seem like the fuel pump to me, but what do I know?

I will check fuel pump too.

Pull the plugs... If you have an injector that is stuck open one plug would show rich while others are fine.

test your MAP, O2, fuel pressure and pressure regulator, and CPS.

Is there fuel in your oil?
