Need some good thoughts

Good to hear he's doing well. Sorry about the insurance.

Long story short, but getting on around 6 years ago I had a total change in career, leaving local government and moving to EMS. I'm a full time paramedic now. I never deal directly with insurance but boy the stories I hear would boil your blood.

Your dad who worked his ass off for his entire life and contributed to society gets shafted. Meanwhile the dregs of society who feed off social welfare and contribute nothing get basically whatever they need. Don't get me wrong, they deserve care like anyone else, but there's absolutely no equality with this stuff. I'd need every hand of everyone in this thread to count the number of times I've taken an unemployed sub 30 year old to the hospital at 2 am for hyperemesis from smoking too much weed. No bills for them.

Also FWIW, people might think that flying someone out to another facility equates to the severity of the situation. It's not always the case. A lot of times it's due to distance. Your dad needed a hospital with a cath lab, and most ambulance protocols say any transport greater than X amount of time get flown. Strokes are the same way. You'd know my employer, you see our green and white trucks around your neck of the woods fairly often. Ours is 50 minutes.

Believe it or not, but if you happened to have a heart attack somewhere up on Badin Lake, there's a chance you'd be flown out from there.
