So where is the best place to get a yard or two of gravel in Winston Salem?

You can buy the bags from Lowes/HD if you have a truck. I think they are a little overpriced, but probably still cheaper than a delivery fee for a couple yards from a hauler.

Do you own a pickup?

You can buy a ton of 57 stone for what six bags at Lowe's cost. Just go to any quarry or stone supply. If WS is anything like Raleigh, there are five of them within twenty minutes of your house.

Vulcan up in Stokesdale. I've bought several loads from them using my 5x8 utility trailer.

Piney Hill Acres also has gravel.

I am going to try and stay away from bags if I can help it. There is a Vulcan quarry not far from my house, I didn't realize they would sell t the public like that, I will give them a call

Bags are $45/.33yd^3 at LowesDepot. And you get a cool bag that you can reuse to drag stuff around the yard, and the convenience factor of getting it anytime between 6am-9 or 10pm. But its waaay overpriced if you're getting 2 yards. Figure about $45-50/yard (~1.5 tons) from the quarry, and the bonus of getting to drive your truck across the scales. I've done both ways. If I just need a bag or 2, the convenience of the box stores is worth the savings.

^^^This, especially considering Vulcan is only open Mon-Fri (8-5 roughly), so the few times I have gone there I have had to take a day off work. Piney Hill Acres only recently started selling gravel, and they are open on Saturday so now I have that source.

I don't know what you're talking about.

They're $4/ea for a half a cubic foot at Lowes

A yard/ton of stone at the quarry is $25. If you get it from a second-tier supplier, it might be $35-45/yd, to cover the delivery from the quarry and the fact they're open on Saturday and the quarry isn't.

Black sand on the south side. They also offer delivery.

Here's a link:
Shop Oldcastle 0.33-cu yd Gray Granite Rock at Lowes.com

Delivery is $35-45/yard if you're getting enough yards to make it worthwhile (5+ maybe?), but they aren't gonna deliver your 1 yard for $10-20 ;)

"Unavailable for pickup"

I didn't say anything about delivery. The cheapest way to get stone is to take your truck and/or trailer, drive to the quarry or local landscape/contractor supply, and have them dump a yard of it in your vehicle.

Its in stock at my store. They probably have some other brand at your store, or maybe they don't stock it because Ruff Rawleigh people don't have trucks.
Regardless,

The landscape supply charges more than the quarry because they have to go get the stone, not because they bring it to your house.

Vulcan in Stokesdale did not require a tarp on my 5x8 utility trailer. I have made many trips from there.

That's right. Especially if you are Harry Homeowner, they won't load unless they see you have means to comply with DOT first.
