I am working on a 79 f150 that has a 460 block in it. The problem that i am having is that the only way the engine will start is if as i am cranking the engine and once it turns over i have to imediately remove the starter cable. If i leave the cable on it will only crank but not run. Now if the engine is running and i touch the starter cable back to its post then the engine dies. I have changed the solenoid thinking that it wasn't disengaging, also removed the small starter wire thinking that maybe it still had power going to it. I am leaning toward that the starter is not disengaging. If it is not disengaging then why would that be? If it needs to be shimmed how do i figure out the right amount of shim? I pulled the starter already and i am going to have it checked out. If any has any info to help or has any ideas of something that is might be missing it would be a great help. Thanx

Sounds like some grounding issue. If the starter were hanging you could hear/feel it spinning when the motor is running. Good luck, I hate electrical gremlins.
