i have a 1992 Jeep Cherokee, i went out to start it and maybe take it for a spin today but it wouldnt start at all.. turning the key does nothing.

i took out the battery and had it tested, it had a bad cell. i got a new one and put it in, it still wont start..

may it be the starter?

im sorry guys, i suck at troubleshooting and really dont know what it could be.

i would appreciate any help. thanks!

just did this myself but befor you go spend a ton of money they can be removed and cleaned with contact cleaner and buy some elc. grease all for about $10 when you take it apart go slow and there are small contacts in side and a couple of springs . total time it should take 20mins.

this. the first time it happened to me I freaked out. If your reverse lights rarely or never come on the the NSS is the culprit.

clean it and keep on trucking:wheel:

okay guys. the jeep actually stays at my moms house- 10 minutes from me..

im leaving my apartment now to check up on it and ill post up and let yous know whats going on.

thanks for all the help so far!! i really appreciate it.

YAY! i got to my moms house tried it, it still did nothing... hmmm

i tried that neutral thing.. nothing.

put it back in park, tried it again.. YES! she started :) im happy.

she did hesitate to start the other three times i turned her on! sooooo i hope all is good but i still dont know what it was that was causing it to not start..

neutral safety switch will do that. can be intermittent/dirty.. can take apart and clean.. I have one thats good that I'd part with for .. PM me if you need it.. There is a way to jumper out the NSS but then it will start in any gear and also cruise control will not work, but its a good way to check if its the NSS or not. New NSS is outrageous priced.. I think $250 at AZ..

oh and that was supposed to say didnt hesitate, not did hesitate lol.

well one time it didnt turn on but i tried it again and imediatley started right up.

what is the neutral safety swith? and what is the NSS? sorry if these are noob questions.

There is also an adjustment on the passenger side of the tranny that can have an effect on it. It doesn't take much.

Neutral Safety Switch (NSS for short.)

its on the drivers side on the transmission, under the shift lever. wiring for it goes up to over by the dipstick, if I remember correctly. tells computer if you are in N/P,1-2,3,D,R..

if it didnt hesitate to start and didnt sound any different from a normal start up then i would agree that it would be your NSS but if it sounds slower then normal or slower then most cars on the road today, then i would think it would be your brushes inside the starter either worn down or they started to collect:poop:
