I am looking at an 2001 7.3L Excursion. I have never owned a diesel before, so what do I need to think about before I buy? What do I need to look out for before I buy? Opinions on this motor and trans? I have read that the Cam Position Sensor (CPS) can go bad on this engine, what does that do and how hard is it to replace? Thanks for any input.

I have a 2000 psd, got mine cps fixed on a safty recall. no problems since.

The CPS can be carried in the glove box. Also very cheap to buy. One 10mm 1/4 rachet and socket can replace it. Right by the water pump.
I have a 95 7.3 and it does great 290,000miles later.
Glow plugs and harnesses are the other thing that you can replace once in while if it needs it.
Excursions are nice....Good Luck

Loved mine - tows like nobodys biz and lots of room in the back for other people if you take folks with you.

i have one and love it...the motor is great and very reliable, the trans is a little soft especially with a load. if you plan on doing alot of towing i might look into getting one of the banks transcommands (i am thinking about getting one soon!) they say the springs are really soft but the very little bit of towing i have done with mine so far i didn't really notice any sway or anything from the softer springs. not real crazy with having to run a WD hitch but it does help with the load distribution so i guess it is alright, its just something else to get setup when you are ready to tow. leaving next week for harlan so i am interested to see how it does. oh and 44 gallons of fuel is a pain until you get out on the open road and unloaded i have gone 800 miles on one tank :huggy: (4 people, a weeks worth of stuff and 2 dogs...and still had space) and be glad fuel prices are back down some, when i first bought mine this summer i was paying $200 a tank...but if you can keep your foot out of it, i can go about 3-3.5 weeks on a tank of fuel and i drive 40 miles a day...

Wow that is almost 20mpg, that is more than I am getting in my Tahoe.

I am still negotiating with the guy, he doesn't want to come down on the price, and he is well over KBB.

From what I have seen, diesel Excursions have been going pretty cheap lately. Don't rush in to it.

The '99-01 7.3's are the ones to have. Good luck with that Ford auto tranny.

I love mine had it for over 2 years, 45K. Things to buy or it will suck: Bilsteins, Hellwig rear sway and E rated tires. problem w/ the Ex is Furd put softer springs in them vs. a F250 even though it is heavier so you have a body roll problem. Easy fix is to swap springs from a JY or someone who is lifting their F250. Go here for what you need to know http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum29/

I love being able to haul almost anything in the dry, sleep in it, carry 8 people. I ususlly get about 15-16 mpg but i like to hear the straight pipe. As for the tranny it is a Ford. Mine is fine for now knock on wood. An unbreakable BTS tranny is about $4300 and eventually you will need to replace it if you tow alot.

add a bigger trans pan and a shift kit this will help with tranny life and the cost is only bot 300 bucks..you will love the thing

I have had mine for 5 years and love it. 01 PSD Excursion on a lift. I jsut recently started having some trouble. Not sure what is wrong with mine as I got 6 codes and 3 are glow plug related. CPS is easy to change as was said earlier. I can pull out the 3rd row seat and fit a full size air mattress for camping. I can't wait to get back in the USA and start driving it again. Anyone now a good Mechanic around Morehead NC?

I say find one witha good price and you will love it. I even have a 6" lift on mine.

if i had the chance to buy an excursion with a 7.3 i would do it in a heart beat
