Hey guys. This is my first post to this site, refered by my bf who has been a jeeper for ....well, ever, lol. I have had a jeep for a few years, bought it for my husband, who has now become my ex-husband, lol. Needless to say, I was left with the Grand and a bad case of death wobble because he pieced a 3in lift on it himself, with not a lot of forthought, heh. Anyway, I am getting the death wobble worked out and want to get a new lift and new tires so that I can begin my journey of learning how to wheel. I have decided on a lift(rubicon express 4.5) but need some suggestions on tires. I want to go with 32/ 10.50's or 11.50's. I have the wheels already, as they are attached to the 31/10.50's that are still on the jeep. I have looked at several and cannot make up my mind. I figured who best to ask than you guys. I have BF goodwrenches on there right now but they are a bit chewed up and want to go with something different since those were my ex hubby's choice. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Look forward to hearing from you all.

Welcome to the board Lisa.
First, a little about what kinda wheeling you want to do. Is this a Daily Driver(DD) or a weekend warrior type ride? What kinda BFG's are you running? What kinda budget do you have? What Gear are you running? Lockers front and or rear?
What trails have you been on, and what trails are you wanting to go on?

Unfortunately for now, it is a daily driver. I have not been on any real "trails" as of yet. I am running BFG all terrains for now, but once I get the lift, I want to switch. Not sure what gears I am running but I have a dana 30 front and 35 in rear. The grand is a 98 if that helps any. Kind low budget for now, somewhere around the 600 to 700 range. Thanks.

Welcome!
The BFGs are a really good tire, despite your feelings for your ex.
In my opinion there is not a better dual purpose, decent street and adequate off road choice.

But if you are set against them look at Some Nitto Terra Grapplers, Goodyear MTRs, or maybe MT Baja MTZs (though I think these blow up your price range), and a fina choice is a Bridgestone Dueler AT. Its not great off road but it will get through sl;ick trails and rides nice on the street. We've had them on the wife's HO for about 20k now and so far no complaints.

Thanks Sky....I have always liked the BFGs on the jeep, ( helped pick them out) but since they have gotten chewed up, I figured I would try something else. Gotta learn somehow right? I have been checking out some Pro comp and some LTBs...anyone have any thoughts on those?:jeep:

i'm running pro comp x-terrians on mine. i love em. not to loud on road and i've got get milage out of them so far. just hit 20,000 and still plent of meat left. little pricey but wait for the buy 3 get 1 free sale twice a year and they're not to bad.

I would do the 4.5" lift and see if you can get a set of these (click me!!!).
From what I understand, they will tuck into your wheel wells and not rub, but will offer good traction, a decent ride, and nice ground clearance.
One thing I would do is wheel it like it is and change what seems to need help.

those are what I have sitting in my drive right now, lol. But you are right, they are a good dual purpose tire. I think I am going to go with some TSL's or some LTB's though.

I have a '98 Grand w/RE 4.5 lift. It will fit 33x10.50's. I do run the BFG AT that everyone is suggesting and they are great for dual purpose setups. One thing to consider is your Dana 35 rear axle probably will explode if you put too aggressive of a tire on it. I blew my d-35 up only running 31x10.50's on my otherwise stock wrangler. Also you are probably still running your stock gears, most likley 3.07, unless your ex changed them.

jeepgirl 2k6 do you have the V8 or the I-6 in your ZJ?

If you have the I-6 then you have a D35 and Rox&Mud is right, its a POS.

If you have the V8 them you have the D44A, its not a bad axle plunty strong for 33's and smaller. The only problem is lockers are very limited and the housing is made of aluminum.

Hope this helps you out for future mods.

Jeepgirl_2k6 is my Girlfriend and I will post some pics for her since she cannot. She does have the I-6 and it is a dana 35 in the rear but we are goinng to remedy that when the funds come in. Apperantly the wheelin bug is contagious and cannot she wait until I have my jeep up and running so we can get to some trails.:driver:

IMAG0022.jpghere are some pictures of the jeep and tires. The blackdiamond sticker is reference to the upper control arms and the BDS steering stabilizer. These are the only custom parts on it.

What do you want to up grade the axles to?

I/we have not figured out what we are going to as of yet. She knows she wants the rubi 4.5" lift and have not decided on tires yet. The 44, 8.8, and the 9" are the options we have and I am waiting on her to make a decision on what she wants to do, as far as how extreme she wants to go with the whole thing.

Here is an axle option for ya is you haven't seen it. http://www.nc4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28051
I am putting an 8.8 in my ZJ.

I have a 8.8 with disc brakes, 3.73 gears, LSD, and still has the stock explorer spring mounts on it for sale. PM me if your interested.

I think getting an 88 setup for a tj would be kind of dumb?
It would take more work to convert it to an XJ than a stock 88 would take and you're paying several hundred more for it to start.
The Jeep shown in the pic is a ZJ not a XJ. BTW ZJ's have coils front and back hence the need for it to be set up similar to a TJ. According to Andy there are some bracket differences from TJ to ZJ, but I suggested the option since he told me that the brackets have not been welded up yet to allow for a custom set up.

Hmm, that's what I get for drinking in the afternoon.
Good point, and sorry about that. :D
