My mom has a 1998 vw jetta that has a recurring no start problem that no one can seem to track down. It sounds like a fuel delivery issue though i really haven't been able to figure mainly to being sick a lot lately and work. Some times the car will start up just fine & run for days without a problem, The CEL will come on randomly & when the CEL comes on the next time u try to start the car it will run real rough & die & not be able to restart. I orinally thought it was electrical so both the Battery & the alternator have been replaced. I really need help trying to figure wtf is going on

Yup. Check the CEL codes. Unfortunately, you may need a VAG capable scanner to do that. Sounds like an EGR problem, though, or a faulty ground somewhere near the fuel pump. What engine?

Is it a 1.8, 2.0, or 2.8. It could be several different things on that year. It could be the mass air sensor. Very common on the 4 cyl. models. Could be a cps sensor also. If its a 2.8 its probably the coil pack. Dont know where you are located, but if you can get the car to me when I am off work, I can hook my vag scanner to it. The vag tells all on a VW.

Srry took so long to respond been in fl for the last week its a 2.0 i checked the code first time it popped up & it was lean bank 1 so i replaced all the plugs & wires
