Need weed eater recommendation

I've got a stihl and use the synthetic oil its a straight shaft about 4 or 5 yrs and sits with fuel in the winter fires right up every time

I have a 4 stroke Troy built. I use it 30 minutes every weekend and it fires on first pull. I went 4 stroke so I wouldn't have to both with two different fuels.

I'm happy with it.

I'd love to have a Stihl though.

Well, my wife's parents ended up buying us a Stihl FS130 for my wife's birthday. It is night and day different from what I am use to. I stuck it in some 3 foot tall weeds and vines in the back yard just to see what would happen. It cut them, and didn't bog. Very impressed.

I know yall are gonna laugh at me, but I bought a $60 Weedeater brand at Sears in 2006. It still runs great. Starts on the 2nd pull every time. I do run 93 octane gas with Husqvarna 2 stroke mix.

Bringing this back up from the dead.

I cut my weeds yesterday for the first time this season. My trusty ol' Weedeater still fired up on the 3rd pull. However, it was lacking in power pretty bad. I kept having to float the choke to keep it alive after bogging it down. I have been threatening getting a new trimmer. After reading all of yalls recommendations, I think I will start the hunt for a stihl.

Now here is a question for debate. What do yall think about the trufuel stuff that sLowes and the other big box stores sell? Is it better than running 93 octane and the manufacturer's brand 2 stroke mix? I usually only burn about 2 gallons of mix per year (trimmer, blower, chainsaw) and I think that having the trufuel stuff would be more convenient. What say the good folks of NC4X4?

I couldn't tell a difference with my 11yr old echo, running back to back tanks of the 50:1 vs my mix. However, as far as storage... it may be a better solution for you

I may be wrong but on the Stihl synthetic mix I run in everything it calls for 89 octane. My Echo weed whacker set all winter long with that mix in it. It fired right up last weekend when I did the seasons first trimming.

I know of at least two folks who killed a 4 stroke by turning it on its side and edging. Starved the engine for oil. So I'd definitely go 2 stroke for that reason.

Im definately going 2stroke. I have heard (if its on the interwebs, it has to be true, right?) that 93 octane gas has very little if no ethanol in it. I had troubles with 87 octane gas a few years ago and read that switching to 93 would stop the problems. Havent had the problem again. Water in fuel bowl.

While you're looking, check out the Stihl Kombi set up. If you do more than just trimming this is a damn nice product. Swap the trimmer for a blower or a hedge trimmer, or a .... They have several parts to swap.

As for fuel, for as little as you burn, it may be worth it for you in the long run to get Stihls fuel they sell. It will keep you from accidentally voiding the warranty.

I run no ethanol fuel in my weed eater only. Pretty critical for all two strokes as the ethanol reduces the lubricity of the mix oil...or some shit my baot mechanic told me.

If you cant find no E fuel, sta bil makes an ethanol formula that claims to "take the ethanol out" of the fuel...

I run 93 octane PURE (no ethanol) in all my lawn equiplment now, and have had no problems.

no ethanol fuel is somewhat hard to find.

Around here no ethanol fuel is becoming more common. Most is 87 but there's one station that has 93. Every Hot Spot station here has no ethanol 87. Don't know if you have those down your way but it might be worth looking into.

93 octane gas is not necessarily non ethanol.
There is 93 otane with ethanol and ethanol free gas that is below (and above) 93 octane.

Agreed, but the PURE brand is ethanol free

Thought Id be a wise ass and post something clever but you never know what your gonna find when you google"goat eating grass".

93 octane and ethanol free for us. At one point had over 60 running chainsaw. Seemed to burn cleaner, stored longer as well. Actually 93 in all our small motors. Quads, bikes, mowers, trimmers, etc. Ethanol will destroy the fuel lines in saws and trimmers. Makes them mushy

I cranked up my 10+ year old Stihl yesterday, had non-ethanol gas from last spring in it. Cranked just fine.

I cranked up my mower with effemall gas from sometime this winter, and after 5 minutes, it started running terrible. I pulled the carb, found all kinds of jelly looking stuff. Cleaned it out, cleaned the plugs, and its running great again. Stupid ethanol.

I'm trying to avoid firing up my weedeater...even though I really need to. I mowed the grass twice so far and that's the fun part since I have a brand new Ferris 52" ZTR :D I just hate to get off of that and trade it for weedeating 8 ditch banks :handed:

I'm gonna go get a gallon of 110 octane and run it in my echo. Shouldn't be a problem I wouldn't think

I have been buying the canned fuel at lowe's called trufuel and using it in my equipment now.

It's premixed at 50:1 and is no ethanol. It's about 7 bucks a quart but I have a small yard and maybe go thru 2 quarts a year.

So for 14 bucks I don't have to worry about ethanol in my blower and string trimmer. I have stihl stuff and it's pretty good. Need to buy an edger.

I can get 110 octane race gas for 7.99/gal and I have plenty of echo syn oil. The gas is ethanol free and I can mix it at whatever ratio I want for almost 1/4 cost of that trufuel shit
