Looking at buying a nice early 2000 suburban for a work vehicle. It's cheap and in nice shape but the engine is locked up. Wondering if someone knows a good place to get a used engine.

What XJSavage said...thats my go-to for junk yard searches. Just call ahead and make sure the yard does or does not require a core charge for some parts. That caught me off guard before when I went to pick up wheels and they asked for a $15 core/per as well which isnt stated on CP.com

Also, with engines. What it comes with will vary from yard to yard, but 9/10 will just hack the wiring harness off at the firewall with a sawzall.

Yep. If you only need an engine or trans it's no big deal.

But for future reference, if you need to swap a motor/trans into something, pay the extra for a "swap in package". I paid $2000 for my 75k mile 6.0, 4l80 w/harness and computer from Case auto in Marion Sc with 30 day (or 90, can't remember) warranty. With that amount spent most places offer to throw in the rest of the truck/car for cheap.

Ok thanks guy I called a place today in Marion and they said 550 to 800 for a take out depending on mileage. Its a 2000 suburban does anybody know if it matters what year the engine comes out of. I figured I may have to change accessories and sensors over from different year but didn't know.

99-02 are the drive by cable years, I know for sure. Should be what yours is and unless you want to swap other parts, I'd go for that year range for a direct swap.
Either way, you have the parts to do it so shoot for low miles.

Ok thanks for the help. Probably have more questions if I pick the suburban up next week.

I bought one from lkq online a couple years back. It was a 170k 5.3 but I was going to rebuild it anyway. Got it for $500 but they have lower mileage ones for a lil more.

99 - 06 will be fine. 03 was the year they went to DBW, but just swap the intake from the original motor to the new one and you'll be good to go. New intake gaskets will be good for it anyway!

That was probably J&T,they are a truck/suv/jeep yard and should have plenty of good engines.
