Well the last couple days the cooling isn't what it should be at the house so I called Jackson and Son's out today to see what's what and they told me it's got a leak from the condenser I guess, said it's falling apart. Of course my unit has R22 and that's the most recent freon that's being outlawed, so all in all they suggested a new unit vs trying to repair this one...original unit from 2004 home build. I don't have HVAC knowledge and was hoping one of y'all that does can tell me what to do? It's a 2.5 ton packaged heatpump if that makes any difference...thanks!

I would most def go new. We had a similar issue last year 2 weeks before my daughter was to be born. what a great time for our AC to go out. We ponied up and got a brand new Unit and Furnace. We ended up going with a Trane and we love it. Our house has never been cooler and our energy bill has yet to be over $185 and that's including water/sewage. I am no expert by any means when it comes to HVAC, but I will tell you that getting a new system is one of the best things we have ever done. Coming home to a nice cool/warm house has been a real blessing for us.

$3300 is a lot better than I was quoted, wish your guy was up my way!

You most likely won't find anyone (that you would want near your house) to install a 2.5 ton split system heatpump. R22 still isn't impossibly high but they will charge you at least $1-200 per lb I'd bet, plus the condenser cost unless it's repairable. Always get 3 guys to look at it. You'll be looking at at least 4k for a changeout with a low end condenser/ air handler.

Totally missed it was a package unit. You can buy a goodman with adapter collars and heat strips for about 2500 delivered. Very easy to install yourself no nitrogen, gauges or vac pump required. People shit on Goodman because mediocre quality but I've got 3 identical houses with the same late 90s Goodman package ACs that are still running.

The package units are pretty easy to install I did a gaspack myself but you would need to find someone willing to come do some small connections for you your also sapose to pull a permit
