Netflix or Hulu

netflix streaming has lots of good tv shows but it seems like 70% of the movies are B movies, every now and then they will put some good movies on. But at $7 a month it seems worth it. I've never used hulu so cant help with that.

Netflix usually gives you a free month so you can decide if it is good for you.

Not as many newer movies since they broke up with Starz

If you register for Hulu, you can get a lot of stuff, and you don't have to pay. Hulu Plus is the pay version. Netflix is great for the Showtime/AMC/etc series on instant, and new movies in the mail. We have no cable or anything, just paid Netflix and free Hulu. We watch a handful of TV shows on Hulu, a couple hours of various series on Netflix, and a new release movie every week. Total of about $16 a month. We used to pay $40+ a month for cable, and don't miss it.

This (minus Hulu) is what I've done for the past 5 years. I've saved a LOT of money in those 5 years by not paying cable. Buy more parts for the jeep with those savings.

Thanks all for the info. I signed up for the free month of netflix. I dropped cable TV and a home phone 2 years ago, but starting to miss a little TV.

I use both. They are mutually exclusive. Netflix only has releases that have made it to DVD/blu-ray. Netflix has better movies, but all of the streaming content is pretty old. Hulu adds tv episodes as they air and has some movies though the movies kinda suck. I use hulu more than netflix. For movies I use vudu, amazon, or redbox.

I've refused to pay for one of those cable packages for years now. I've just been using the regular digital antenna, enjoying the 3 channels of HD.

I found out last month that the cable company is required by the FCC to allow you to have limited basic tv for cheap. It's not a package, and they won't tell you about it. You have to insist on "limited basic". It's only $14 a month, now I get channels from 2 all the way to about 120 something. In all about 70 channels to pick from. History, Discovery, TLC and a bunch of others are in there too. And, there is no contract.

Again, when you ask for the basic, they're gonna try their best to sell you a package. Even when you insist on limited basic, they'll tell you it's only your local stations, about 15-20 depending on where you live.

Just a heads up if anyone didn't know about it.

Hulu Plus still has commercials on it, netflix does not.

So who do I call to get this package?

We have time warner. Our plan is for internet and the lowest cost cable available, which has the standard channels, plus OLN and a few others. Bad thing is, road runner and the TV runs $75/month and it goes up literally every month or 2. I was amazed that this months rate was the same as last, but included with the bill was a rate increase schedule for next month...

Off topic a bit, what what are you guys doing for internet/streaming access? I want to get the internet but don't want to spend a minimum of $50 a month just to get that, which seems the going rate. Any secrets out there?

Back on topic, we use HULU plus, Netflix, and Crackle on the ROKU. Only Netflix doesn't have commercials. I'm thinking of cancelling the HULU. Crackle is free and has a few episodes of 'all in the family' on it. I'd love to have a start to finish run of that show. It reminds me of my dad. He used to watch that show all the time.

I switched from TW to Clear for internet. $49 a month, It's worked OK so far, really can't tell an difference from TW. Still have TW TV for 8 months. I took ALL my stuff to TW, they cut me a 1 year TV only deal for $52 a month, lots of channels. My TW bill was getting jacked $2.95 every month it seemed. Gotta be a better way. Thinking about a HD antenna like walltenna or leaf and Netflix/Hulu.

Im stuck with CenturyLink for internet here, came bundled with a DirectTV package.

While the CenturyLink internet can be pokey at times, I have had far less issues with it than I ever did with cable internet.

Now the DirectTV, I can safely say I will NEVER, EVER go back to Cable. My only complaint with the DirectTV is that I have TOO many channels, and its sometimes hard to find the ones I want to watch. My box has some magical feature that learns what I watch and when I hit the menu button it displays shows that are on that fit my preferences, and its generally spot on. I can record up to 5 shows at a time, and the storage capabilities of the DirectTV DVR is far more than the cable one. I pay nothing extra for HD either, compared to 10 bucks a month on cable. I pay around $92 a month for DirectTV and internet, which is pretty cheap for what I get. My cable bill from Charter generally ran around 130 a month for the same service.

I do have a subscription to Netflix. I've had it for years. I don't watch nearly on the same level as I did when I first got it, but its only 9 bucks a month so I just keep it around. I used to use my XBOX for streaming Netflix, but my new TV has WI-FI built in so I use that now. My sister has a ROKU box and loves the thing.

Another option is Amazon Prime. While the user experience isn't as neat as Netflix or Hulu, there are a lot of videos on there including new releases. I think it's $80/year...but in addition to videos you get free 2-day Amazon shipping, which pays for itself if you shop online. Rather than run to Target or WalMart, I just buy it on Amazon and have it delivered to my door. They even shipped a 22' collapsing Werner ladder to me...free 2-day shipping.

I tried Hulu+, got rid of it after a month. I'm still with Netflix and Amazon.

X2, except for movies I use xbox video or redbox. I just wish this crappy windstream internet wasn't the only choice here. also have the hd antenna to get the 3 or 4 channels on the air. Built the thing using a 4' piece of wood, woodscrews, and clothes hangers. works very well but you have to rotate it sometimes to pick up other channels, also wish I had built it with some kind of adjustable stand. the thing is kinda beat up from falling off of nightstands and shoeboxes to get it to the right height.
