Looking for a mid-high grade double hung window. Looked at ABC supply in Conover today but they are pushing Atrium and not impressed. Gong to go search out some good Andresen windows tomorrow (not HD or Lowe's). Any recommendations?

I wish I had a good answer for you but find them because cheap windows come back to haunt you. There's a company in Stallings, NC that makes windows called Barefoot and Companyhttp://www.barefootandcompany.com/ . They used to make all their own products but it looks like they are manufacturers reps now.

We have Plygem in our current house, and Andersen in the house we are currently building. There are things I like and dislike about both, but they are in the same ballpark overall. The Andersen's feel a little more solid because the Fibrex is thicker and more wood like than vinyl, but the Plygems feel like they are built tighter. You're welcome to come by and touch and feel (the windows).

Of the easier-to-get brands (not the amazing fiberglass brands from Canada, for example), Pella and Anderson keep coming up in my searches. Both have bad stories as well (all big window companies seem to have quality problems at times), but seem to be mostly good feedback.
I've heard horror stories about Plygem quality, but that goes to show how quality can be all over the map for almost any brand.

I've got Plygem aluminum clad wood in my house. I would consider them a mid grade window. I like them for the price..(I had like 36 windows to replace in my house.) We just put some Anderson vynil clad wood in my in-laws little cabin...same price range as plygem ($400-$500). They look and feel good as well.

Did you have to go back and edit that, or was it an immediate thought?

I used to work for Pella windows in Greensboro. I replaced every window in my house with Pella, and for the new construction sections, I used Pella Designer series (wife wanted the blinds in the glass). They are some of the easiest windows to install with their fold-out nailing fins. The warranty on the windows has expired, but they are still perfect. Mine are wood frame windows with aluminum clad exterior.

For the replacement windows and the front two new construction windows, I used Thermastar by Pella that I bought at Lowes. For a low price window, they are very efficient.

What material are you looking to use? (vinyl, wood, fiberglass, etc)?

I used to work with high end windows. See if you can find a Marvin dealer near you. Those were probably the best windows I worked with. They are exspensive tho. They have several lines tho. I cannot remember what their names were tho.

The Norco line of Jeld Wen was decent too. I have not heard much from them in a while tho. I would go with the Marvins if it is in your budget
