In December I bought a HP pavilion dv7 and ordered it with a 1 year subscription to norton, microsoft office, and a i5 M460 processor.
It ran great for a couple months, then I installed ArcGIS. Its a big program, but I was working in it fine for a couple weeks. All of a sudden about a week ago, it wont play DVDs...when trying to shut it down, it wont. I have to manually shut it down now. Its running SOOO SLLLOOOOWW that it takes 15 minutes to open the start menu. Even longer to open any other program. I cant get into my email, it just freezes and hangs on everything.
I ran Ccleaner which changed nothing. Last night I let malwarebytes run a scan and after 5 hours the scan was compete and it found nothing.
Today I have it open and a Norton Performance Alert window popped up. It said "High Disk Usage coming from host process for windows."
I opened task manager and sure enough, one of the svchost.exe files is taking up 82,000k of memory, and its description says "host process for windows."
Should I end process on this file, or could it be something I need? That is taking up 8 times as much space as any other single file. Any advice? I dont know what else to do besides a system restore which I really dont want to do because I will have to reinstall photoshop, ArcGIS, word etc....
If I do have to do a system restore, will I loose norton which came installed on the laptop fro the factory?
