New Offroad Headunit!

That looks nice, they really used to be on top. I haven't heard one in a while, some things aint what they used to be, but the waterproof and capable of playing a cd in three foot waves would be perfect for my cj :driver:

For just over $100 I got this unit from AutoZone. I love it because it has a remote, usb outlet and accepts a memory card behind the faceplate. Never skips that way, and after 2 years you can afford to throw it away and buy something else!

BTW, do you like the genuine hard wood back plate??

I've got to get the kids to catch me up on the new tech and get the 8 trk out, used to work good with the match pad crammed in the corner! the alpine unit is rated @18 watts and 50 watts max does that mean 18 min. and 50 max to get speakers to comply?

X2 on just getting one that takes a USB or memory stick. 100% solid state, no moving parts. It will never skip. You can get them cheap now.

Its rated at 18 watts RMS output (Root Mean Square, fancy for saying average output), but will put out a maximum of 50 watts for a short time during parts of the music.

I work in the audio biz, so i cant be riding around with the cheapies in my ride. I tried about 4 different decks, with a marine cover and they kept smokin, so time for an upgrade. Prolly gonna do some jl tower cannons, and jl marine amp as well. Ill def post some pics when i get it goin.

A Marine head unit would be ideal but a cheapo one will probably be just as good for 3 years or so.

Only thing about the Alpine is that their iPod interface SUCKS. I hooked mine up and the damn head unit just skipped around to different tracks. Wouldn't follow an album nor a playlist. That is why I got rid of mine.

Also the controls were pretty small, so just check go check it out first.

Personally I go with Sony. I've had nothing but good luck. Great layout and interface. Sure, they aren't as good as a Kenwood sound wise but I can use the damn thing!

Problem with the full head unit is theft, and marine units are typically only a marine face. A jeep seems to like to dump water down the back of the dash and into the inside of the radio which is not marine rated. I run a Lowrance XOG in my rig for music, but now that it is discontinued I am not sure what I will switch too. I really like the GPS and audio mixed into one nice neat waterproof package.

Wife bought me a el cheapo in dash mp3 player from Wally World, there is a reason its only $40.I took it back it wouldnt push the factory speakers. I hate to put something too nice in it with the theives around here.

you have obviously not used a newer alpine. I sell them daily with great results. Sony makes a great playstation :shaking:

I have. I bought an alpine, installed it, didn't like it, took it back to trade for my current Sony.

The Alpine does have a little better sound quality but I think the controls of the Sony are A LOT better.

Sound quality doesn't mean anything if you can't use the darn thing! Also in a few months I'm going to be replacing all the speakers in the car and adding a sub in the back. I dunno what I'm going to do, but I am most certain that amp'd front speakers, tweeters on the door, with a set of nice 6x9 with the little tweeter in the back and a 12 in the trunk will perform nicely. With replaced and amp'd speakers, it'll sound super great.

Or I might just put the sub in and it'll be good enough . I like teh low end BOOM.
