I recently used a company to create some custom exhaust heat management products and was amazed at the outcome. In talking with their sales guy I learned they have done quite a bit with motorsports and OEMs but had no familiarity with the offroad world to speak of. (Outside of some work with Polaris on their UTVs)

In our industrial application we had diesel generator exhaust pipe running adjacent to a chilled water line. (I didnt design it that way, I just got tasked with solving the problem). IR gun showed exhaust pipe surface temp between 1300-1450F. with a 1" thick wrap/coating it was below 300F.

My mind immediately went to packaging exhaust and steering lines in tight buggies.

I used their Thermlinc Elite product...
 
My only issue with wraps is moisture retention...and relegating those $1000+ headers or $1500 exhausts rust buckets after a couple years. Different story if you're talking cheapy throw away headers/straight pipe.
 
Their product can incorporate a moisture barrier that prevents outside water from reaching the external surface....

I'm telling you, this isn't even comparable to any wrap I've ever seen. It just isn't.
I'd love to see what some of our local buggy builders could do with this stuff.
 
You're spending $1000+ on headers that aren't stainless?

Not all stainless is created equally, ie chromium content. And stainless can still corrode. Again, depending on grade, air circulation, water salinity, etc will all react differently. But really, it's more of a $500 header plus $450 at Jet Hot.

Thanks for the info...have an old set of uncoated Mad Dogs I'd give it a try on.
 
It the temperature delta is really that high, it will be badass for exhaust gas energy retention for turbo systems.

I do still have that rock. It was sought after for its perfect shape and size for specific heat retention properties.
