4 cyl, 4 speed, 2 wheel drive= 442

Well I sold the YJ about a month ago. Been wheeling in my beater XJ and loving it. But I have always had a desire to build a Jeep/Yota truck. By that I mean a Jeep Comanche, but geared stupid low, with 4 cyl injection, and moderate tire size. Just the same as you see numerous, capable Yota trucks out there, but keepin' it Jeep.

So I found a couple of rigs to splice into one to start the build. First an 88 MJ 2wd, with a TBI 2.5 with slight front end damage. Next, a stripped 84 XJ with a 3" lift, 33's, AX4 and 231 case. I already have a D30 to get it rolling for now laying in the shop. $300 for the MJ and $400 for the XJ.

So 35xj and I spent about an hour today stripping the XJ to rob parts for the MJ, here's some pics...

Plans are for a Waggy front 44, 5.89's, Yota IFS rear w/5.71's. Keep the 2.5 stock, stock trans, one of Superpile/WNCCJ 231 doublers, 4.5" front with our longarms and an SOA out back. Toss on some sticky 35's and wheel the piss out of it.

Keep it light, weak, and geared...

yeee haaaa. yota and jeep hybrid. The best of both worlds. I'm betting 2800 lbs and stupid capable. Guess I'll dig my plans out for a 231 doubler.

those yota 5.71s and dana 5.89s are very very weak in those axles.. you might want to go down to about 5.29s/5.38s.. I know thats not as low as you wanted but the gears would be less brittle...

That can be true. Luckily, I have been setting up gears professionally for about 10 years now. I have never had a failure with either one of those ratios. I have actually corrected other shops installs to alleviate repeated r&p failures especially with the 5.71's.

looks like a fun project. keep the pics coming.

if you are worried about failure, send them off and have them cryo froze.

Jody (WNCCJ) Knows the ins and outs of setting yota and dana gears for sure. I've seen them hold up after he has set them with insane abuse from the right foot. 35XJ and myself have beat the living crap out our gears and never had a failure and that is saying something, not to mention Ben's yota and the flogging that thing gets every trip with 5.71's. Jody is the only person I trust to set my gears. :huggy:
Are you going to go auto to help cushion the blows by the way? I'm sure you remember the abuse the 85 pickup took with the auto and 5.71 gears, I tried to break that rig the last 3 trips and like a true yota it just held together.
Back to painting the living room now. Damn it.

No auto for this one. Gonna keep with the Jeep/Yota theme and keep the manual.

Got my Waggy 44 and IFS rear lined up. Now I gotta find another 231 and I'm set...

Get back to painting Superpile, maybe Ms. Pile will let you hang out with us this week...

damn! one member of a group gets a pimpin new ride......

and suddenly, everyones gotta have one!

J/K this one has got me excited to work on mine. (for the g/f of course! )

5.89's and 5.71's? Isn't that a bit too much of a discrepancy. I've always heard to keep your ratios between 1 and 1.5 percent of each other. I guess its not a big deal on a trail rig.

Will not be too much of a difference to cause any concern especially on a trail rig. If I was building it for more street driving I would make changes as needed.

Looks like a cool new project Jody! I hate to see the YJ go! This will be sweet though. Give me a call if you're ever down toward Charlotte. We need to get a run together soon... Let me know if I can ever help out with anything down this way.

light and low geared.... thats the best way...

thought bout runnin yota axles in my heep as well cuz of the 3rd member design and ratios... just wondering why you chose to run a rear yota, instaed of a d44?
