So I've lived in CLT for a few months now. I just purchased a Nissan Xterra Pro-4x. I'm a guy, love to get dirty - and want to get the truck dirty (thus why I'm selling my Acura). Where can I go to do some light off roading to get a feeler? Does the truck have potential? I didn't purchased it to go do 4x4'in, but I know it's built for it.

Welcome to the site.

A few things that will help you get along well here. First, no illegal offroading is accepted here, and for a list of legal wheeling places around here, see this: http://www.nc4x4.com/forum/index.ph...-complete-list-of-legal-wheeling-places.6882/

Also, what is a whip, and when did the Xterra come with a truck bed? ;)

But really though...I mountain bike and hike a lot in Uwharrie and wasn't aware of the 4x4 trails I just read about. I figure I'll check this out this weekend when I go biking over there. Tips or anything I should know in advance?

Stay off any trail that's name starts with a "D", and you'll be fine. Get out there, wheel responsibly, respect the land, and welcome to the forum. Also you might want to check out the fall jamboree at uwharrie. I think it's in October?? That would be a great weekend to come down, there will be plenty of people that'd be willing to show you the trails. Also, try to wait for a dry weekend, Uwharrie changes totally when it rains. :driver:

curious as to the specks of your truck...
what kind and size tires
any lift
any protection underneath

On the "avoid the trails that start with a D" statements that are made whenever somebody questions riding there,My advise is to find some folks to trail with and when you get to the difficult sections, ride up with somebody to see it and then go get your rig and let them help you through.Coming up the front side of daniel is the toughy one to do. You can do Danial from the backside and do 90 percent of it and have a good ride. Dutch John is easy peasy till you get to the hill climb and then it's some momentum (not too much gas tho) to the top.Oh,there is a little off-camber rocky spot about 30 foot long that you will negotiate but it ain't a panick spot. Dicky Bell, keep on the right 2/3rds the way up and then cut hard right, circle left to the top.
What I did my first time out was find a group to wheel with first,
I wheeled my tj so I bought a used set of MTs on junker rims so I would have something other than street treads
learned the weakness of the tj and had tools and such plus a very important full size spare.
Had an outstanding time!

Awesome info guys. Thanks! I do want to go out with a buddy first. No fun riding in one truck. Rather have someone else for safety as well. My specs are a Nissan Xterra Pro-4x. 4x4. All skid plated. Not sure tire size. Locker. Hill climbing modes. Bilstein shocks. Etc etc. Its their version that's built for trails.

Anyone going that way today? (Uwharrie)

He is looking for a feeler. o_O

Cool I'll have to see what's up.

I took the truck out there today. Holy cow! What a blast! They got intense fast but I am extremely impressed by how the xterra handled it all. Makes me want to add a little lift to it!

Not sure I would have admitted that on a 4x4 board, lol. Welcome to the board though! Glad you had fun at URE. Just FYI, the ORV trails close December 15th and reopen April 1st every year. It is definitly wise to wheel with others, especially when you are new and learning.

A little lift? Oh you poor child. 4 wheelin is like sex. The first time you do it, it is AWESOME! And then you decide it would be better if you were to do it a "little" bit different, next thing you know, you're in an orgy with 2 girls, a donkey, and a hermaphrodite dressed like a clown. Really, the only difference with 4 wheelin is that nobody on this board will bat an eye or laugh at you when you are on the side of the trail with a borrowed sawsall cutting your 6 month old trucks fenders out because your new tires are rubbing and keeping you from making it over the big rock. Some of them probably wouldn't laugh about the donkey and the hermaphrodite either but most of us would. :D
