To follow up on an earlier thread, it looks like I'm going to look at this Scrambler on Sunday, with the intention of purchasing. I have basic mechanical/engine knowledge, but have been out the Jeep game for almost 10 years. After I get this beauty home, what are the first things you guys would check for needing service?

A little background about my mechanical "knowledge"... Owned and built a 99tj for 9yrs and sold it in 09'. Swapped an 8.8 and did a 4 link from scratch. I kind of did everything half ass'd back then and I want to do the right thing with this jeep, as it will be mine for what I hope for a long time. Thank you all for the input and advice.

Do you plan to wheel it or just cruise and collect?

With the value of nice scramblers these days, I would try to keep it mild; but what is the fun in that.

What drivetrain is in it?

I dont think there is anything major to check out, other than looking for any possible rust in the floors/rockers/frame. Maybe putting 1 piece shafts in the 20 rear, if it has that still.

Aside from typical maintenance stuff (grease, oil, air filter, etc), regear it (if it's not geared appropriately already), do the OME spring swap, make sure your sway bar links are the correct length, run the headlights through a relay and upgrade them, and enjoy it as is until things start to fail :) I've been daily driving mine every day this week

I’d do the basic services on it and check body and frame for rust as said. I’d probably start saving for rust and body repair before it gets worse to save some of the headache.

Change all fluids. Check ball joints and tie rods for play. Check DS u-joints for play.

I would not wheel that thing. At least not any real wheeling. I would buy a beater to wheel.

Check brakes, hose/line condition, driveline joints, suspension, grease everything, check & service fluids as needed. I'd keep it for weekend/daily cruises and find something cheap to wheel and beat on.
