I have been doing a lot of reading and have come to the conclusion I need someone that knows what they are doing.
I have a 1978 CJ5 with the original AMC 304 and I am getting a pretting strong fuel smell. I think it has Edelbrock 1406 carb on it. The PCV and low vacuum lines are capped. The vent line coming off the poly tank has no line coming off of it. I know there is no evap canister. From my understanding, I need a line coming off the poly tank to go through an evap canister that would then go to the low vac line on the carb to be burned off. Am I right in thinking this? Here is my new rig, I can't wait to meet you all.

you're thikning about right. The vent line coming off the tank should first go thru a liquid check and a rollover check valve (not sure of the order), then up to the evap cannister. The valves should be under the tub in the drivers side rear corner

When my CJ had a strong gas smell, it was actually the tank that had some pinholes in it. Mud and crud gets stuck between the skidplate and tank, then wears it out. I went thru 2 tanks like this in about 10 years.

Im no help either but that is one of the nastiest CJs Ive seen!!! Its looks straight off the showroom floor! Love the flat fenders and sidepipes too!

Thank you all for the comments. I have a lot to learn. The Tires are 37's on 20 inch rims. It is nice and clean but I have a couple little things to sort out. I am definitely seeing what everyone means by Just Empty Every Pocket!

I think it is fixed

Well, I finally have put everything back together and started up the Jeep and am not smelling the gas smell anymore. For those that are curious.

-I dropped the tank.
-Added new fuel line
-Along the frame I installed SS fuel line from inline tube
-Added new hose from the SS fuel line to fuel pump
-Added new hose from the fuel pump through new filter and to carb.
-I also vented the tank, the two vent lines were plugged off.

A couple observations from a newbie:
- rubber lines get stiff after it gets some age on it, and can leak.
-clamping through the Stainless braid cover does not work very well (I took it all off)
-when reinstalling fuel hose make sure every connection is tight or the fuel pump will not pull fuel into the carb
-I did end up priming the system by putting fuel into a little rc car fuel bottle and connecting it from the back where the tank is. That seemed to get fuel all the way through the system and then I just connected it too the tank.
-I think the vent will be important too as far as for the ease of filling
