Hi everyone,

I am moving to Raleigh at the end of the month from Colorado, and I was reading that NC requires a safety inspection and an emissions test. My situation is I have a 79 cj7 that has a 4.5 inch lift and electronic fuel injection with some of the emissions equipment that was'nt needed removed with the fuel injection kit. Do you all think I will have any problems getting the Jeep registered.

Thanks again,
Colin

fattypackard is right on the money, the only things that have to have "emissions" checked is with OBD2 systems so anything 95 and older its just a safety, unless you live in a county that requires just safety no matter the year.

And next year you won't even need the safety inspection. You'll have to adhere to all the rules, but you don't have to get the inspection. My 1979 rig never even came with emissions equipment and has an air cooled engine making it not that 'clean' an engine.

North Carolina vehicle safety inspection is required within 10 days of receiving a North Carolina license plate or by the last day of the month printed on the inspection sticker. Vehicles 35 years old, or older, are exempt from the North Carolina vehicle safety inspection. The cost of a passed safety inspection is $9.10. The vehicle inspection can be performed at any of the 7,500 licensed inspection stations throughout the state. Most service stations, automobile dealerships and vehicle repair garages are licensed inspection stations.
If a vehicle fails the safety inspection, it cannot be operated beyond the expiration date of the current sticker. However, the owner has 30 days to correct any safety defects and qualify for a re-inspection at no additional cost, provided the owner presents a receipt of the initial inspection.
might wanna push that out a few years Kimball........

crap, I was hoping he was right, but you confirmed what I thought.
No problem getting anything registered, the state will gladly take your money, give you a tag and tell you to get it safety-inspected within 30 days. They're pretty good on tracking down delinquent emmission inspections, but seems like they could care less about the safety inspections ;)

IIRC as far as emissions goes, if it had it new, it's still supposed to have it to get the inspection. Not checked, just have it in place. No matter what year

Technically, I think you're correct. Luckily for the OP, the safety inspection doenst consider emmissions equipment.

I put a MPI system on my CJ, that got rid of the air pump and the thermostatic-hot-air-off-the-manifold-into-the-air-cleaner-thingy. It passed back before they changed the inspection rules to OBDII-only, but the level of leniency in the inspection process differed at every service station.

I've got a little experiment going. I bought a vehicle in South carolina and got it titled and registered here in NC. I have yet to get it inspected and am going to wait till I get a notice in the mail (or something else telling me I need to get it inspected.) to do so. We'll see if I get a registration renewal next year. Only been two months so far...

you may not get a notice till you go to renew the tag, OR, THE MAN pulls you.

The have been a lot of check points around Raleigh as of late, and inspections stickers is the first thing to get you pulled and papered.

Yeppers.
And even pulled cause "I didn't see a sticker"
He was friendly though, but it sucked wasting 20 minutes of my day.

Good luck :D

OH, and the notice you get when you renew the tag will more than likely cost you $250, ON TOP of the tag fees and a lot of headaches.

You ain't the first one to try and work the system, predicted outcome, they win, you lose and it'll cost you more than if you'd have just done it right the first time.

What year is the vehicle? I bought my 87 Samurai 3 yrs ago, and have never had it inspected. No sticker on the windshield for 3 yrs. I have reregistered it every year over the computer without problem. If it isn't OBDII (96 and newer), you won't get the letter in the mail about the $250 emissions fine.

you should but there not up on it as hard as the obd2 yet they said buy 2008 they will be on them 100%

Hey thanks for the info on the emissions requirements for my Jeep. Do you know if they will give you a hard time for having big tires and a lift?

Colin

Here's my thoughts on my experiment. If the vehicle isn't ever entered into the computer, it won't get kicked for not having the inspection done. Most cars are entered by the selling dealer as soon as it get to the lot so it's impossible to get out of the inspection.
