I just picked up my first tow rig this week and I have some questions. Its a 1989 F250 4x4 w/ 7.3 diesel and auto trans. It will be used as a weekend work truck and tow 8k-10k pounds about once a month. This is my first diesel so I want to make sure I do things right. I'm thinking a trans temp gauge is needed, is that all I need for gauges? How difficult is a trans temp gauge to install. There is no turbo so I don't think I need an EGT gauge. What about fluid changes and filters. I wanna go ahead and change all fluids and filters to be safe. Lastly it looks like the original tires were load range E and currently the tires on it are D's. I need to replace 2 or them, do I need to go back to E's.

i'd get a good trans. cooler
oil 15w40 rotella is good and replace the fuel filter for sure.
go ahead and get a new air filter to.

from my research when I had the uhaul (7.3 IDI no turbo) unless you plan to turn up the Injection Pump you don't need to worry about EGTs Watch the overall engine temps... Maybe slap an mechanical guage in one of the heads.. If your cooling system is up to par you shouldn't have any problems..

CHECK YOUR SCAs in the coolant.. The 7.3s seem to be by far the most susceptable to cavitation problems that proper coolant properly addresses...

If you decided to check and add your own additives I have 5 bottles of the ford/motorcraft FL something ... SCA additive..
