So, I bought a new vehicle back on 11-23. Did all the paperwork at the dealer, got a paper tag, and headed home. 30-day tag expires next Wednesday.

Got a call today from the person at the dealership that handles the DMV stuff. Dealer can't find the manufacturer Statement of Origin, so she can't get the plates for it in time. It will take a few weeks to get a replacement Statement of Origin from the manufacturer, meanwhile, my temp plate will expire. She is going to try and get another 30-day temp tag and send it to me, but not sure that can be done.

I'm gonna go by DMV and check the VIN number and be sure it hasn't already been thru the system (i.e. slightly used sold as a new??). I figure that absolute worse thing that could happen is that somebody took the Statement of Origin to a title loan place and got cash against it, and there is a lien out there.

Can a dealer legally issue a 2nd (or 3rd, if it stretches out) 30-day tag??

Comments/tips/advise??

The DMV keeps track of that stuff with the dealers. My girlfriend worked at a big name dealership that had multiple occasions where they could not get the paperwork done and get customers their tags on time, the dealer was on the edge of loosing their dealers license over the situation. The problem lies on the dealer not doing their part if you were to get stopped

They can give you one of the tags they use for a test drive. Or at least that's what they did for me.

That's how harrelson ford got buystred in Charlotte. They are doing some shady what though...but it unraveled in exactly this manner.

I'm almost positive that the dealer is not allowed to issue an additional 30 day tag. But some dealers do it anyway.
Yep. I had this problem with my last vehicle. Temp tag was about to expire so I called the dealership. They said they couldn't issue me another 30 day tag but not to worry because "they doubt I would get pulled over". I said hell no! I told them I wanted it in writing that they would pay any ticket/legal issues. The asshole that was supposed to take care of it the past 30 days to begin with had to walk the paperwork to all the places it needed to go and I got my tag the next day. I also had to pick it up at the dealer because there wasn't enough time for them to mail it. Now that I think about it, Sanford Honda just sucked all the way around, and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

Rant complete.

Did find this....

§ 20-79.1. Use of temporary registration plates or markers by purchasers of motor vehicles in lieu of dealers' plates.

(h) [...]Upon the expiration of the 30 days from the date of issuance, a second 30-day temporary registration plate or marker may be issued by the dealer upon showing the vehicle has been sold, a temporary lien has been filed as provided in G.S. 20-58, and that the dealer, having used reasonable diligence, is unable to obtain the vehicle's statement of origin or certificate of title so that the lien may be perfected.

I'd lean on them to give me a properly tagged loaner vehicle until they had my new tags delivered. That'd get them moving.
