My father just brought a 1994 YJ yesterday.
Body is pretty nice for the age. 6" Pro Comp lift New 33" BFG Muds on black rock crawler wheels. Also has a 3" body lift which we plan on removing. MM 8K winch and a couple extra goodies.
The bad.....knocking motor and bad trans.
So can someone give me the specs on the 1994 model YJ so I can start helping my dad collect parts for the upcoming winter project.
He is happy with the amount of lift but is there anything that can be done to the drive train?? SYE ??
I see the front the VAC disconnect...is that OK or do people have problems with that system??
I would like to find a good used motor if anyone have a source that would be helpful.

What is the ultimate goal of the project? Mall crawler/dd or trail rig? If it is going to be a dd I would look into getting rid of the giant shackles, maybe even a shackle reverse. Are the springs stock just body lift and shackles? If so, I would look into a soa.

Springs are Pro Comp
DD / Beach Rig / light trail is what he is after....

Mainly we need to get the drivetrain fixed...So that is the info I need to get parts

Nice looking YJ. We need more info though to help you out. Is it manual or automatic? 6 or 4 cylinder? If its a 6 cylinder manual then it has an AX-15 tranny. If its 4 cylinder manual it has an AX-5 tranny. I know nothing about the automatic transmissions though.

6cyl 5spd = 4.0l ax-15

Nice looking YJ but yeah, ditch the disconnect and the crazy tall ride height.

As for used motors, I don't know a good place right off the top of my head. Could always pull the one you've got out and build a stroker.

Yeah I looked into the stroker build.....I will have to see if it's a main or rod bearing and go from there.

Thanks everyone for the info.
And yes we are pulling the body lift off and we have already reconnected the sway bars.

put factory sized shackles back on there too, even some heavy duty ones.

With 6" lift, I would hope a SYE was used. If not, I'd get one. Its been a while since I purchased one, but it should be easy to install and not too expensive. The driveshaft will be the expensive part. Look around on the FS section, I thought I saw a SYE and 4.0L for sale (seperate threads)

I just saw a XJ 4.0 for free, just pick up in Fayetteville... maybe it's still available. it was on here too

doesnt all 4.0L have the same knock...is it bad or a subtle knock...I have had them with 60k to 140k miles and the older they get the louder they get but they still keep on hittin' it...

Buy a Chilton book. All the info you need for $20. Money well spent. I don't see how you can drive that without a SYE. I'd think you would get vibration from the drive angle with that size lift. I paid over $500 for my SYE and driveshaft. Not real cheap but makes a world of difference. Get rid of the shackles and cut the body lift down to 1". I like a little bit of room between my frame and body. Makes cleaning easier. Nice lookin rig.

Thanks for all the kind words

We are going to start pulling the engine trans t-case this weekend and I hope to be picking up parts next weekend. I think it will stay like it is while we work on the drivetrain because the height helps crawling around under the rig.

Does anybody have a link to some nice stock length shackles??

SO what about an 8.8 swap??
Width about the same??
Anything special to make the disc brake system work??

What can I do about the vac lock 30 up front with out to much hassle??

I know you can get new shafts and take out the shift motor, search vacuum disconnect delete.

If not that, get an XJ front with the same gears and put some leaf perches on it.

Get a rebuilt AX15 from MANTRANS.COM unless you can find a good used one. They send it in a crate with a return shipping label for the core. I have done a few of these including my own and they are done right.
