Looking real hard at buying a 76 J10 with 360, 4-speed and T20.
Basic truck is in better than average shape. Has 411's in the twin Dana 44's. It needs a new flywheel, one is included in a box.

General question. HOW do I as a neophyte, tell if this truck has the 1-ton stuff underneath. DUMB I know, but I'd like to verify eveyrthing. It's a heckuva good deal and a good runner already. That part I know (less having to roll started it ofcourse).

Any advice on what to particularily watch out for as I am NOT yet savvy on things Jeep. Chevy, Dodge, yea, I can find my way around.

I like the idea this is not a Quadtruck..I've got nothing good or bad to say about Quads, I just think the T20 and 4-speed, right now, for the money, suits my overall needs as an all around truck.

Appreciate any and all feedback.:driver:

a j10 is a 1/2 jeep truck. d44 axles are 3/4 ton at best, usually half ton. if they are 8lug they are 3/4 ton. if they are 5 or 6 lug, then it is 1/2 ton. j trucks are generally good trucks. you have found what i have been looking for. if you decide that you don't want it let me know. i do.

It's QuadraTrac, not QuadTruck. If the truck is a J10 and has Dana 44s, then it doesn't have "the 1-ton stuff underneath". It's rated like any other 1/2 ton pickup. Check around the frame where the gas tank mounts up and the floor pans for rust. Being a '76, it probably still has the original, crappy ignition system (if the advance canister on the dist. is white plastic with two vacuum ports).
This will be a good start for you.---> http://www.ifsja.org/tech/index.html and www.oljeep.com

Yea, I know, that's just my personal abreviation.
I do know where to find a 78 with A dana 60 in the rear. I think that was after the fact on that long bed. That one is a Quadratrac.

SO, what would I need to make it a 1-ton?. Obviously dana 60's front and rear which would have the heftier axles. Springs?. Brakes bigger or same all around?.

For 500 to 600 bux, and a minimum of rust (flloor pan, already fixed on passenger side with sheet metal). Color is mediusm dark red.

Appreciate the pointers. AND to the person wanting to buy if I don't, I'll forward the information to you when I make up my mind.
Right now, I've been offered a heckuva deal on a 67 Shortbed Chevy with a Poncho 400/TH400 installed and posi rear end. Already hae the motor and trans sold out of IT, and have dibs on atleast THREE replacement engines. 472 and 500 Caddy's.

The Jeep truck would just be my everyday, if I need it 4x4, tow stuff ride.

BTW, what's the upgrade/fix for that crappy ignition?.

FOR OLDER VEHICLES:
*1977 And Older 304 & 360 CID V-8 Engines With The Delco Breaker Points Style Distributor. You have three choices,
1. Up Grade to the Motorcraft distributor & DuraSpark ignition module, and add the upgrades described above for the Motorcraft distributor.
2. Use an electronic ignition conversion kit for the Delco distributor. If you install an electronic trigger in the Delco distributor, you may use the DuraSpark or MSD ignition modules, but you will have to go to the aftermarket for adequate distributor caps & rotors.
3. Use a MSD ignition module that will work with breaker points. You will still have to go the aftermarket for adequate distributor caps & rotors.

*1977 And Older 304 & 360 CID V-8 Engines With The Prestolite Electronic Ignition. The Prestolite Distributor can easily be recognized by the large vacuum advance canister just below the distributor head. AND THE DEAD GIVE AWAY IS THE VACUUM ADVANCE IS MADE OF PLASTIC. The only choice you have is to upgrade to the Motorcraft Distributor and DuraSpark or MSD Module.

now use the links I gave you.

How much to go with the Motocraft and Duraspark?. Were these in the 78 and later 360's?. Got access to about 5 engines from 79 up. Thanks:alien:

If there is a 78 with the D60 rear, then it should be a J20 and will be 8 lug. the front will have a 8 lug D44.

D60 front axles from a GM or Dodge (with leaf springs) will fit on there fairly easy.
