I thought it would be interesting to see how many people still get the local newspaper delivered to their house. I used to get it delivered everyday, but that started stacking up real quickly. About 8 years ago we switched to weekend only, we liked the TV guide part on Saturday and the Sunday sales flyers and coupons. For some reason, they would always upgrade us for no charge to Fri-Sun, and we would still end up getting papers on holidays and other random days. Our yearly renewal notice came this week, and I think we're gonna finally stop supporting this dying industry. About everything else is paperless, heck I think I've even read in the newspaper how the newpapers readership is down.
 
It's no lie the newspaper industry has taken a hit over the past year or so. I should know, I work for a major distributor of the New York Times and Washington Post out of eastern Virginia. People find it much easier to use the internet for their news since it's instantaneous, rather than wait for "old news". I'm afraid that within the next 5-10 years or so, paperback news will be a thing of the past.

btw, I don't have a subscription to any paper at my household. I did when I lived in Greensboro, but they just piled up in the foyer.
 
No shit on "newspaper industry down".
Currently the only daily paper left in Baltimore is bankrupt (part of Tribune co) and not likely to be here much longer.
The idea of a city of that size having no daily paper makes me lol.

When I lived outside Winston I kept getting into it w/ the W-S journal, every few months they would just randomly leave a "complimentary paper" on my driveway, except they'd leave it on the back drive and it'd sit there for days before we'd see it. I'd call them and bitch about them leaving it, how it's like a big sign saying "nobody home please break into my house", if I wanted one I'd call them, please stop littering my property. Every time, I called and requested not to get one again... to no avail. I used them for packing material and firestarter.
 
I'm a 7 days a week guy, old habits die hard, but I actually thought about it this morning while reading the paper. Sections A and B had 1 inside piece for a total of 6 pages in each section! Pretty thin and not much news, might be rethinking things if this trend continues.

You're exactly right, and that is the reason that the papers are doomed. Instead of raising their game and coming up with original content that people feel compelled to buy, they continue to rely on the news wires for all of their stories. Well guess what? Every other news outlet in the world has access to those same news wires, so why should I buy it filtered down from the paper when I can get literally the exact same articles for free? Most daily papers days are numbered.

Bingo.... No original/local content... Do people not know how to report on stuff anymore?
 
I would agree on the no-content issue.. but honestly I just don't have time.

We still subscribe to the Kernersville News / I guess my wife reads it somewhat, I almost never bother.

I DID buy the Amazon Kindle back in Feb..but I have not bothered to subscribe to any of the newspapers on there / though if they would drop the price to something reasonable I would consider it. (But I would want an "ala carte" system that only sent me things I was interested in)

Newspapers are dead... now local papers like the Rhino Times still have a pretty decent readership, because their articles are local and relevant!
 
I don't get the Charlotte Observer but I still get the Lake Wylie Pilot cause they don't charge for it
 
I get the Northwest Observer, becasue they mail it weekly for free. Good points about local content; the NWO is actually pretty good, covers the local town meetings, etc.

I still subscribe 7 days a week. It's mainly ritual, though. I spend 15 minutes of recliner time in the AM sucking down a 32 oz cup of coffee and reading the N&O. Sunday paper takes a little longer. It's so darn cheap that if you find it of any value at all it's worth subscribing. Flipside, it's so close to worthless that I debate whether or not to continue.
 
we're on a "motor route" they couldn't hit the box, it was always in the driveway, and soggy wetwith rain or dew. that, and I considered how much paper was going to waste.

7 papers a week, was about 100lbs of paper a month that " I " had to find a way to dispose of. tossing in the trash wasn't a good idea, the recycle bin we ~had~ might get emptied weekly or not, so then it became a hassle to dispose of. I can get what ever news I need off the web.

We have also tried to stop as many of the phone books as we can as well. why do we need 6 phone books ? if I need a phone number, I can find it online usually, in some manner or another.
 
I don't think printed news will die completely. Its govt. supported as is a means of communication and record keeping. We do a lot of work for our local paper and talking with them, we had to schedule our shutdowns very well as there were HIGH liquidated damages if we couldn't get our projects completed. Also, back during hurricane Floyd, while everyone didn't have power and businesses were closed due to flooding, etc., the newspaper was still working 24-7 with generators and help from the National Guard...


I don't get the local paper as its all boring to me and I can catch it on TV in 5 min or online at work :D But, I do get the Wall Street Journal daily :)
 
Haven't got a paper in years. Haven't had a land line phone in even more years. I do believe these 2 industries are going to die.
 
We get it daily, but the local paper here has just that, lots of LOCAL information and stories, not regurgitated crap from the AP.
