The guys from TJC and I were up at Brown Mtn and were parked near the large mud hole, and a guy with his girl showed up with this newer Nissan truck and hit the mud hard and fast many times, I managed to get some video of it.

My question is how did it keep from getting water in the engine. If I had hit that in the Jeep I will still be draining the water out. Gotta give some props to Nissan on that one. It looked near stock. And they drove it away.

A few things.
1 - going through quickly like that, you'll get a splash, e.g. some spray in the direction of the box, but it'll never be submerged. He'd have to stop AND have it up to teh hood line for that to happen. Plus the fast movement of teh truck pushes it away as he goes through.
2 - does he have a "box' style, or a cone? That makes a huge difference too.

Reason these are important is that water/mud weighs alot more than air. The vacuum of the engine will easily suck air in, but will suck water only if it is ocmpletely occluding the air.
Imagine taking a straw, and poke a few holes in the shaft. Now stick it in a coke and try and drink out of it. what happens? Not much. The air goes through the holes first.
The bigger the cone/more air surface, the more you can get crap on it w/o the vacuum pulling it in.

Sounds like your Jeep sucks.... :flipoff2:

Looking at the vid, I'm not sure what makes you think he'd suck water. I've been in deeper than that, never had an issue.

Air box is in the upper driver's side....behind-ish the driver's headlight. Air is pulled from the inner fender there.

Bigger concern for the engine, going through gunk like that (especially repeatedly) will be the low-sitting alternator. Mud like that will eat one up in short order on these trucks.

He's having a big time now. Later on it will cost.

Hey Mike, let me know the next time TJC is going to Brown. I have yet to make it there!

I will, I am just not sure its worth the ride from your neck of the woods. Its nice mountain trails, but there really tame, Its like riding Falls Dam up and around a mountain. One 8 mile trail.

Its real nice on a lazy Sunday afternoon to ride up and hang out. But I am only 15 mins away.

Unless he switched his stock airbox for an open filter (not many Nissan owners do), then he was fine with that run. Like Red X said, he is going to be hating life soon due to a dead alternator. While a great design for the 350Z (which the Frontier engine is based off of), it is a horrible design for offroading.

Also, I believe hitting the water like that forces most of the water away from the truck, so he probably was fairly dry underneath anyway. They also come with skid plates, which help keep some of the water out.

Id be more concerned about the alternator and distributor than sucking water

The biggest question is..Did he impress the chick? If so..why should he ever care about an alternator or air filter? They cant give him no lovin'.

I guess the bottom end of the engine bay is well shielded, I have hit spots that aren't deep and the splash up is what gets me.

Are you actually getting water in the engine or just wetting the distributor? I had a friend with a YJ who used to hit holes like that all the time and the only problem we ever faced was that the distributor would get wet and it would start sputtering. Always ran fine after we let it dry.
