a friend of mine just receive a e-mail from tyson,he e-mailed them telling them how unhappy this made him,i'll post it here

"Contrary to recent reports, Labor Day has not been done away with at the Tyson plant in Shelbyville, TN. Recent RWDSU(Retail, Wholesale & Department Store Union) contract negotiations resulted in a different holiday for workers covered by the contract, for which the union bargained. Employees not covered by the contract will still have Labor Day as a paid holiday. The union asked for and received eid al-fitr in place of Labor Day as a paid holiday. Employees receive eight paid holidays per year, which is the same number provided in the old contract. The contract does not provide for an additional holiday."

IF they asked for it, then I'd see no reason to protest Tyson. There is still freedom of religion in the US isn't there?

the way I read that...the contract/union employees swapped holidays...but the non-contract (managers?) kept Labor Day......and if that's the case, that would be the time the union wouldn't be getting my dues anymore...

I can't imagine they have a different contract just for Muslim workers...it's all or nothing...but maybe Carma could clarify...

I got Good Friday off at my office. Most of the people here are Christian. If I worked in a mostly Jewish business, i wouldn't be pissed if they got together and said "let's take Passover off." Fact is, when 700 of your 1200 employees are Muslim, you're going to be working with a staff of 500 on the last day of Ramadan (one of their biggest holidays, on par with Easter and Passover) anyway. So what's the big deal with management being flexible? There will be fewer TV dinners made on Oct 1 instead of the first monday of September. Big whoop.

Yes, there is still freedom of religion here. They may practice their religion however they wish. If they come to this country, or convert to Islam, they should abide by the customs set forth by our forefathers, as would be the case for us in a Muslim based society. It is not a company's or anyone else's responsibility to make concessions due to their religious beliefs. It is the individuals responsibility to find an environment conducive to their needs/wants. Remember not all business closes on Christian/Federal holidays. Their employees are still expected to work. Are these Muslim workers more important than anyone else, no.
But to me the real problem in this is not the Muslims, it's the "Union". We don't need such representation for workers anymore. The only real purpose for unions now is to bilk money from their members and falsely raise the price of goods to consumers and to continue to politically secure their positions of power.

I hear that the Muslim Union threatened to put bombs in all the tv dinners if they did not get their Ramadan.

But if the majority of the workers are Muslim, then for that company, that IS the tradition. Just b/c it isn't the tradition for the rest of the counrty (those of us who don't work for that company and are completeuly unaffected by this) is completely irrelevant. You have to think of this plant as being a societal microcosm.

You don't see us celebrating any of the holidays that were set forth by the folks who lived here before us white guys showed up, do you?
Fact is, majority rules. No way the Union reps would have even tried thsi unless there was a huge portion of their populous that wanted it.

I really have no problem with incorporating holidays for other religions, the truth is, it's only fair - especially if it an optional swap kind of thing (that's not real clear...?). I just find it interesting that the traded day was Labor Day... why Labor day?

why Labor day?
Yea, why not Christmas. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't believe, don't celebrate, go to work as any other day. But don't tell me I can't have off because you don't want it off.
