No start. Dead Battery?

Before I drop $130 on the CHEAP battery.

I went to crank the Jeep and I got the CLICK and then nothing. after a few more tries I noticed it was becoming a weaker and weaker click. Tried jump starting and I got a series of clicks, but wouldn't turn over. I checked all connections from battery posts to starter solenoid. tried again, with same results.

Let it charge on a charger and still couldn't get it to turn over. put a meter to the battery and it said 12V, but I like to have 13V to dismiss the battery.

After checking and testing several items again, I noticed that the click from the solenoid would get weaker and weaker. but the jumper cables back to it and the clicking would get strong again.

Tells me weak/dead battery.

Battery is old, so it wouldn't surprise me. I just have limited funds right now so I don't want to throw parts at it and want to make certain it's the battery.

I'm just questioning myself since I have 12V and with a jump it still won't crank.

If you do get a new battery, order it online from Advance Auto, and get $40 off:

thanks, but I need it now as my Jeep is sitting next to the loading docks of one of my Vendors warehouses. :p
Order online and pick up in store 5 minutes later for $40 cheaper than it is in the store...

Although I see you have already gotten one.

Did you double check that all connections were good, tight, and corrosion free? A loose or corroded connection can allow just a good enough connection to operate accessories, and have the VM show correct voltage, but under the load, the bad connection will have enough resistance to not allow it to start.

Well, I read the rest of the thread and :p but I hate you wasted $40. Take it back, say you haven't used it, haha.

New battery and good. I've never had a battery just die like that. No signs, no weak starts, no problems. Then just dead.

'Tis the season. Batteries hate temperature extremes. Aloternators, too. We had a Saturn that seemed to 86 a battery or an alternator each summer, alternating years. The wife would call me from a parking lot saying it wouldn't start, and I'd meet her with a new battery. Good for two more years. Or she'd talk about the lights getting dimmer on the way home. Change the alternator the next day. Always seemed to be on the hottest day of the summer.

My burban's battery is going south too. Just bought it in October, called dealer, and he checked and it's still under warranty, so just have to go get it exchanged.

Been running batteries out of junkers in my hauler, they seem to be going too, so, need a battery for it.

Battery in my Old's is 6 years old, so, it's on borrowed time.

Battery went out in the RV, but I had a new one from Wally World that I put in.

I have a blue top I am going to try in my truck, got it from neighbor, he couldn't charge it, but seems he was trying a heavy charge for a couple hours, I put it on 2 amps for a couple days, seems to be holding.

but, gonna keep this in mind it I have to go buy one!

Keep an eye on those everstart batteries, every one I've seen has leaked acid and rusted everything around it.

I bought a WalMart Everstart Maxx to put in my Silverado, it leaked, warrantied twice, and both of those leaked too, got rid of it after that, had to get a new battery tray because it was rusted out below. The same time I bought that one I had bought two to go in my diesel, checked those after the 2nd ordeal in my other truck, sure enough, both had leaked, was able to just clean and repaint those trays though. All 3 batteries went to scrap. Bought my 78 several years ago...guess what was under the hood? A leaking Everstart Maxx and a rusted out battery tray and inner fender below it. After googling, apparently it is very common with their batteries. I've replaced them with a SuperStart AGM from Oreilly's, Interstate, and a couple AutoCrafts, none of those have leaked or had any issues.

Chip, check out the battery specialist on Old Lenoir rd in Hickory. They sell all kinds of batteries and buy scrap ones too. Mine is an Oddessey cop car take out. Gel cell, $250+ battery. Got it used for $100. Anyone who has ever wheeled with my commando knows the workout the starter gets, it's never let me down.

Sent while I should have been doing something constructive...
